NJ Weekend Events May 22-23: Free Fun Abounds with Bubble Wrap, Concerts, Sensory-Friendly Movies and Fitness!

It’s a crazy, mixed bag of activities in New Jersey this weekend, as we creep towards Memorial Day (the unofficial start of summer)! Bubble wrap art, birds, Broadway showtunes—and two rockin’ family bands headline our weekend selections. So go indoors for a sensory-friendly movie and the impossibly cool Dan Zanes & Friends, or sashay out into the sunshine for fitness festivals and the Laurie Berkner Band–don’t forget your sunscreen and a pig for your head!

Bubble Wrap Magic at Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton)
Pop! What kid isn’t obsessed with bubble wrap? (Or what parent, for that matter). Come to Grounds for Sculpture to participate in a family workshop where you’ll transform bubble wrap into sculptures that float from your imagination. Not only is this popping-bubbles-heaven, but finding a use for these discarded materials helps the environment at the same time. Saturday, May 22 at 1pm. FREE with paid park admission of $12/Adults, $10/Students (13+) and Seniors, $8/Children (6-12) Members and Children under 5 are free.
 
Raptor Trust Tour Talks (Millington)
Feel like spending some time with hawks, eagles, falcons and owls this weekend? The Raptor Trust is one of the premier wild bird rehabilitation centers in the United States and visitors are afforded a unique opportunity to view the big birds close up. The Tour Talks will meet at the Raptor Gift shop on Saturday, May 22 at 11am and 2pm. $10/Adults, $5/Kids 12 and under. Registration required, call 908-647-1091.
 
Walk n’ Roll 2010
(Johnson Park)
The amazing Children’s Specialized Hospital, preeminent provider of rehabilitation healthcare for children with special needs, is holding their fourth annual fund-raising Walk n’ Roll. Come and walk or roll a 1, 2.5 or 5-mile course along the beautiful Raritan River, followed by a carnival with live music, games and prizes.  Walkers and rollers should check in on Saturday, May 22 between 8am and 10am; the event begins at 10:15am. Dan Zanes and Friends at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts (Morristown)
Grammy Award-winning Dan Zanes gives one of the best concerts we’ve ever seen, so put on your dancing shoes and head out to the Community Theater at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts. They perform exuberant, handmade music for kids and kid sympathizers and bill themselves as “Woodstock for Kids”. Yep, that’s just what it feels like. Sunday, May 23 at 1:30pm and 4:30pm. Shrek Forever After-- AMC Sensory Friendly Films (Cherry Hill, Hamilton, Wayne, West Orange, Freehold)
AMC Entertainment and the Autism Society have teamed up to bring families affected by autism and other disabilities a special opportunity. This weekend you can enjoy a fun movie—Shrek Forever After—in a safe and accepting environment.  The "Sensory Friendly Films" monthly program serves this unique audience by having the theater lights brought up and the sound turned down for a much more sensory-friendly experience. Families are allowed to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Also, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing; no “Silence is Golden” policy for this crowd. Saturday, May 22 at 10am. Cost is $4 - $6 depending on location. The Celebration Singers Concert (Cranford)
The Celebration Singers Children’s Choir performs its spring concert “Music Memories” at the Harvest Center in Cranford. The concert will feature a variety of music including classical selections, Broadway show tunes, spirituals and pop tunes and the finale will feature 140 singers ranging in age from 9 to 80 years old! Now that’s some serious range… Although there are many children's choruses throughout New Jersey, the Celebration Children’s Choir is unique in that it is tuition-free and is sponsored by an adult choir. The children usually perform with the adults, giving them the opportunity to see that singing can be a life-long enjoyable activity–and not just in the shower! Fit and Fun Festival--Camden Children’s Garden (Camden)
The Camden Children’s Garden is itching to make you healthy. This festival will highlight fun ideas for a healthy lifestyle, with a focus on simple physical activities and nutritious eating. There will be crafts, a veggie make-and-take planting activity and educational activities that support healthy living. This is the Camden Children’s Garden Fourth Weekend Series, Saturday, May 22 and Sunday, May 23 from 12pm to 4pm. $6/Adults, $5/Children (3-11), and free for kids two and under. Healthy Kids Day--Children’s Hospital of PA (Philadelphia)
Is it worth a drive to Philly to celebrate the Children’s Hospital’s contribution to healthy kids and see The Laurie Berkner Band? Oh, we think so. Add in a Youth Walk, games, rides, cooking demonstrations, exercise, exhibits, face painting, magic, and arts and crafts, and you’ve got an amazing day of fun. AstroFest—Dreyfuss Planetarium
(Newark)
Calling all would-be astronomers and junior astronauts to the Newark Museum for AstroFest, a day-long celebration marking the re-opening of the newly-transformed Alice and Leonard Dreyfuss Planetarium. Climb on a 30-foot inflatable model of the space shuttle, create a miniature working model rocket, build a sundial, and travel back in time (via a theatrical presentation) to meet the father of modern astronomy, Galileo Gailei. Saturday, May 22 from 11am to 4pm. Planetarium admission $5/Adults, $3/Kids under 12, seniors and college students.
