NJ Weekend Events March 27-28: Lots of FREE Fun: Farm Animals, Fishing, Treasure Island and Telescopes!

3/24/10 - By Desiree

Rain? Snow? Sun? Who cares?  Whatever the weather this weekend,  New Jersey’s got somethin’ goin on!  Head outdoors to see newly-born farm animals; break out the fishing poles to kick off fishing season at the Trout Hatchery; or collect glow-in-the-dark rocks from a world-famous mineral deposit.  If the weather goes South, head indoors: kids can learn all about Treasure Island and pirates at the Cotsen Children's Library; enjoy African art and crafts at Montclair Arts Museum's free family day; or hunker down in the Liberty Science Center to learn about oceans, chemistry, and the HUBBLE telescope.  Mother Nature, bring it ON!

Pequest Trout Hatchery Open House and Fishing Market (Oxford)
Let the fishing season begin!  Kids ages 8 -16 can try their hand at trout fishing at the pond (all equipment and instruction supplied) and kids under 8 can fish in the Kiddie Fishing Tank.  And the best part is that you don't need to bring your own fishing poles!  There will be “fish printing,” displays, FREE archery lessons for kids 10-and-up, fish feeding demonstrations, a fisherman's flea market, and much more.  Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm.  FREE.

Beekeeping at Howell Living Historical Farm (Lambertville)
The main attraction this weekend at Howell Living Historical Farm is NOT the lecture about the life of a Bee Colony.  It’s the baby animals!   Visit up close with newly-born twin lambs, newly-hatched chicks, and baby pigs!  Saturday from 11am-3pm visit the animals and win prizes if you guess the correct weight of the babies.  From 1pm-1:30pm, the farm's beekeeper will inspect the farm’s beehives, followed by a 2pm lecture on beekeeping.  Finally, kids construct their own, take-home beeswax ornament from 11am-3pm (the project takes about 20 minutes).  Parking and admission to the farm is FREE, and there is a $3. materials fee for the craft project.

Mineral Collecting at Sterling Hill Mining Museum
(Ogdensburg)
If you’ve been startled by loud clunkety-clunk noises emanating from your washer, only to find your child’s dirty pants had rock-filled pockets, they will be blown away by the rock selection at Sterling Hill Mining Museum (and especially the  fluorescent glow in the dark rocks!)  On Sunday, the museum offers extensive mineral collecting from various parts of the mine.  There are age restrictions however: kids 7-and-up can collect rocks from the mine run dump (the fluorescent kind) and those ages 13-and-up can collect marble and other rocks from other parts of the mine.  And the mineral collecting is just the tip of the iceberg.  The museum also offers a huge underground mine famous for its "rainbow room" of glowing rock and other mine equipment, minerals, and fossils to explore.  Mineral collecting is Sunday from 9am-3pm and costs $5. for admission plus $1.50 per pound of materials.  Ages 7-and-up or 13-and-up, depending where you are collecting.  Mine tours start daily at 1pm and are $10. for adults, $7.50 for kids 12-and-under.  Wear sturdy shoes and bear in mind that it is always around 56 degrees in the mine, regardless of the season, so be sure to dress warmly.  For more information, call 973-209-7212.

Princyclopedia at the Cotsen Children's Library (Princeton)
Shiver me timbers!  It’s the Cotsen Children's Library largest annual event this weekend, where they bring a book to life through hands-on projects and activities.  This year's pick is Treasure Island, so the library will have treasure, tattoos, real pirates, a 52-foot themed obstacle course, real naval cannons, and more.  Saturday from 10am-3pm.  No advance registration required.  FREE.

FREE Family Day at the Montclair Art Museum
(Montclair)
If you haven't yet been to this little but impressive art museum, this is the day to go!  Family Day occurs just twice a year, and not only entails FREE admission, but also tons of fun and hands-on activities for kids.  The event celebrates the nature of African American art and culture with artwork, dance performances, gallery activities, and fun family art projects.  Sunday from 1pm-5pm.  FREE!

Ocean Weekend, BASF Lab, and Hubble at Liberty Science Center (Jersey City)
Glub! Glub!  Liberty Science Center focuses on the ocean this weekend! Check out fresh and saltwater experiments, Beach Bucket investigation, ocean current education, paper fish crafts, and a sea-exploring submersible robot.  Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3pm.  On Saturday, the BASF Kids Lab brings hands-on chemistry experiments to kids ages 6-to-12.  Or check out the new IMAX HUBBLE movie featuring stunning images of the most distant features of the universe.  Ocean Weekend is Saturday and Sunday from 11am-3pm and FREE with admission which is $15.75 per adult and $11.50 per child ages 2-to-12.  BASF Kids Lab is Saturday from 10am-noon or 1:30pm-3:30pm at an additional cost of $5. per person.  Registration is required for the BASF Kids Lab by calling 201-253-1310.   IMAX HUBBLE shows daily at 9:15am, 11:15am, 1:15pm and 3:15pm.  IMAX tickets are $9. for adults and $7. per child with discounts if you purchase admission plus the movie http://www.lsc.org/lsc/visit/prices.  Advance tickets can be purchased by calling 201.253.1310, or e-mailing sales@lsc.org.
