Long Island Weekend Events September 24th-26th

Fall is in full swing, the school year started and this weekend is a great time to take a breath and savor the beauty of the season. You can soak it all in at a fishing classic, learn about butterflies, attend a fall festival, or hear a gourd orchestra! This weekend is also the perfect chance to venture into a museum new to you, or revisit a favorite--on the Smithsonian. We've got the details for you here.

Surf Fishing Classic

Head out to Montauk Point State Park for the Surf Fishing Classic. This tournament is family oriented and the park offers the historic Montauk LIghthouse, great views of the water (seals!), and wonderful nature trails. Entry fee is $15 per participant. Cash and equipment prizes!

The kids can't get enough of those butterflies. Can you blame them? The whole life cycle is so amazing, and the gold detailing on the chrysalises is spectacular. You can catch all the details at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach State Park this weekend. Even walk through the butterfly garden. Hurry, I hear the butterflies are heading to Mexico soon, you don't want to miss them. $4 per person.

Wildwood State Park is hosting a family friendly fall festival this Saturday. Take in the beautiful setting while enjoying the wagon rides, pony rides, inflatables, environmental displays, craft vendors, children's entertainment and a pie eating contest! Free admission.

There are two fabulous events planned at the LICM this Sunday. First the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra will be hosting a workshop at 11:30am (ages 5 & up). The artists will help you create your own gourd instrument. Cost is $4 with museum admission, $3 LICM members. Then at 2pm the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra will perform in the theater using gourd instruments. Quirky and cool. (ages 3 & up) $4 with museum admission, $3 LICM members, $8 for theater only.

 

Smithsonian Magazine Free Museum Day

Take advantage of the Smithsonian Magazine's Sixth Annual Museum Day and check out the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. This is a great opportunity to enjoy this picturesque and charming town, and check out the cool exhibits and hands-on family activity center. 

 

 

There are also pumpkins to be picked and corn mazes on Long Island this weekend.
