It’s Back-to-School time! (I know, I’m just as bummed as the kids). A new year, a new teacher and a new curriculum sometimes results in the same academic struggles. Whether your child needs extra help in Reading, Math or Science, investing in a tutor can’t hurt. Tutors help inspire and encourage students, giving them that extra push they need to become head of the class—or close to it. Here is a comprehensive list of NJ-based tutoring centers ready to help guide your child.

The Tutoring Center (Piscataway)
Open year round, the Tutoring Center in Piscataway offers tutoring sessions Monday to Thursday at 3:30, 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30 PM. Some centers have sessions scheduled on Saturday mornings at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 AM. Depending on your program, your child will attend 2 or 3 sessions per week. Another great offering? Online Homework Help! You purchase it as part of the one-on-one tutoring.  State-of-the-art technology offers hourly rates, and all sessions are recorded for highest security and quality assurance. Online tutoring is available for all ages: K-12 Math, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, College Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and College Level Science.

Huntington (Various locations)
Initially founded in the 1970s in NJ, Huntington has than 10 tutoring locations in New Jersey including Wayne, Springfield and Pennington. For the teens in your life, it’s helpful to know tutoring is available in algebra, pre-alegbra, biology, physics, SAT, PSAST, ACT and GED. It’s solid and well-known Huntington SAT® test preparation program prepares students for the demands of the SAT®, including academic knowledge, time-management, and test-taking strategies. Subject Tutoring is also available for all ages (K-12) and all Huntington tutors are college-educated and are either state or Huntington certified and many hold advanced degrees, usually in education. Each Huntington facility offers windows between every instructional room to insure that all tutors are under our constant supervision and that no tutor is ever alone with any child. 

Somerset Learning Center (Raritan)
The Somerset Learning Center is unique to tutoring centers in New Jersey as it is not part of any franchised chain.  The center, located in Raritan, creates personal learning programs and provides individual instruction to students in kindergarten to college.  Registration is currently available for Math, Writing, Spanish, and Science tutoring plus basic study skills and homework help. The tutoring is done in small groups; two to three students work with a teacher in a private room, each focusing on his or her own individual learning program. Note: Tutoring is available after school and use their own textbook materials in the sessions.

Sylvan Learning Center (various locations)
Sylvan locations include Hamilton, West Windsor and more and Sylan provides school learning programs for K-12 students, college and adults in reading, writing, English, math and homework help. Additionally, Sylvan prepares students to take the SAT, ACT tests for college entrance. Additionally, the Center tutors for the GRE and NJ Ask tests and guarantees your student will improve 1 full grade level after 36 hours of instruction in math or reading. Academically, tutors at Sylvan customize a plan based on your child’s unique learning needs and academic goals and there’s a Johns Hopkins CTY Program for Talented Youth which develops the talents of the most advanced K-12 learners worldwide.

Mathnasium (various locations)
With locations throughout New Jersey, including Summit, Montclair and Denville, Mathnasium learning centers to boost student’s math skills and is highly specialized, meaning they ONLY teach math. Members usually attend two or three times a week for about an hour. Tutoring is available for all ages. Students receive one-on-one tutoring, and, initially, Mathnasium students are given a two-part diagnostic test: a written test designed to assess the student's weakness with respect to grade-level material and oral questions designed to assess the depth of the student's understanding of key math concepts and skills. The tutoring is then personalized for each student based on these results, focusing on areas that could best benefit from specialized tutoring.

Preferred Tutoring (Various locations; call for info)
Available to students in NY and NJ, this center provides high quality tutoring services for students in grades K through 12 in a one-to-one or small group setting. Preferred Tutoring Services made substantial contributions to the achievement of students who have lagged behind in Language Arts, Reading and Mathematics and provides one to one or small group tutoring; the number of students in our groups never exceeds five. Preferred works with bilingual teachers and special education teachers and have individualized curriculums to better accommodate the needs of ELL students and special needs students.
