There is no shortage of things to do in Los Angeles in May. From Mother's Day to Memorial Day, we've got the best events happening all month—and May the 4th be with you!

You've won the blue ribbon, your ship has come in, and mamas, it's your day this month. Fresh out the gate, it's the annual return of the LA County Fair. In a galaxy not so far away at the Academy Museum, a May the 4th Celebration takes place. LA Fleet Week docks into LA as the Port of Los Angeles hosts active military ships over Memorial Day weekend.

Cinco de Mayo Celebrations in Los Angeles for Families

First, let's set the record straight: Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day. What the day actually celebrates is an underdog Mexican victory over a French military attack on Puebla, Mexico, in 1862. The holiday is mostly observed in Puebla and Southern California, where there's little mention of the French but much swinging at piñatas and dancing to mariachis.

Many Cinco de Mayo events are pub crawls or margarita mixers. However, we've hunted down celebrations the whole family can enjoy (but mom can still find a margarita at most of these, too!). There are Cinco de Mayo festivals throughout LA and the OC, starting as early as a week before the big day, so get in the spirit to dance, watch parades, and nosh on chips and salsa.

Mother's Day brunch might be the perfect way to kickoff celebrating Mom on Mother's Day. Newsflash: Mom does not want to make breakfast on Mother's Day. Another newsflash: Mom does not want to clean up breakfast on Mother's Day. It's best to just avoid the kitchen altogether, which means that the best way to feed mom (and the whole family) is to go out—but not just anywhere.

Mother's Day brunches in Los Angeles are full of coffee in carafes, ocean views, and impressive patios. Read more for the best mom-pleasing places, some with special menus for Mother's Day, and buffets that will keep the whole family happy.

After brunch, treat Mom to a day of her favorite activities, whether a gorgeous botanical garden, a serene hike through nature, a kid-friendly museum, or sweeping sandy vistas for a walk along the best beaches in Los Angeles and Orange County

Best Horseback Riding and Trail Rides for Families in and Near Los Angeles

Riding off into the sunset is about as Hollywood as you can get. Yet, many of us city-slickers have never even hopped on a horse! The hills of Los Angeles are the perfect place to hit the trail, and I've rounded up (pun intended) the best horseback riding in the LA area for families.

As a longtime equestrian, I can attest that these options provide a memorable experience that doesn't require alot of horse sense. Stable staff only select their most docile mounts for the trail rides, use western tack, and ensure horses keep a slow and steady pace. Some of these spots even provide pony rides around the ranch for the littlest cowpokes that may not be up for a trail ride just yet.

Horseback riding is among the best things to do in Hollywood with kids. For more horseback riding experiences, check out summer horse riding camps in Los Angeles and Orange County
