Long Island Kids' Activities September 1-3: The Shinnecock Powwow and the Hamptons Classic
It’s the official unofficial end of summer…. Where did the time go?! While we’re mourning the end of our leisurely days enjoying the warm weather, we’re also looking forward to the start of the school year (perhaps me more than the kids…) and some early-fall fun. We’ve got a beautiful weekend on tap for this Labor Day weekend—perfect weather for the beach or a barbecue or both. If you’re looking for something else to do with the family, there’s a whole lot going on out east this weekend. Pack up the kids and a lunch and head on out. One of my favorite Labor Day events is the Shinnecock Powwow: great fun for the whole family and a great way to teach the kids about Long Island’s heritage. Go. And while out there, check out the Hamptons Classic, The events at the South Fork Natural History Museum, and the fireworks in East Hampton Saturday night. Happy Labor Day weekend!

You’ll have an up-close look at the marine creatures of the bay, the nursery of the ocean, with fisherman Al “Big Time” Daniels, as he sweeps his seining net through the near-shore waters of Noyac Bay and brings in a variety of marine animals—small fish, scallops, crabs, and maybe even a turtle—to surprise and delight you. This is an excellent adventure for the whole family.
Saturday, Sunday, and Monday
66th Annual Shinnecock Powwow
Shinnecock Nation Reservation
Southampton
10am–11pm
Adults $12; seniors, disabled, and children 6 to 12 $10; children 5 and under free
The Shinnecock Nation's powwow is four days of amazing competitive traditional dancing, drumming and singing. The costumes are amazing, the venue is family friendly, and it is a unique chance to meet Native Americans from all across the Americas and to enjoy their diverse cultures. Vendors of arts and crafts will be present as will food vendors offering not only mainstays like hot dogs but also delicious native treats like fry bread. If you have the courage to brave Labor Day weekend traffic on Montauk Highway, this is an event that really should not be missed. Kids love it!
