Weekday Picks: Week at the Museum, Contemporary Art, Mummies, Hot Wheels, & George, September 21-25
This week is all about museums. Scientific discovery begins with curiosity, and no one has more of that than a springy monkey called George. The Discovery Cube LA opens a new exhibit dedicated to this rapscallion and his long suffering friend in the yellow hat.
The mummies have arrived at the Natural History Museum. Mummies are indeed fascinating but can sometimes be a bit scary for little ones, so tread cautiously. In Santa Ana, The Discovery Cube debuts Hot Wheels: Race to Win, an investigation of the science behind speed. Two museums that don’t need special scheduling are The California Science Center in Exposition Park and our new contemporary art museum, The Broad, both of which are always free.
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
For parents interested in the science of education and the art of getting your kid into the right preschool, there is Wednesday's Preschool 101 workshop. Wrap up your week of culture with a celebratory lobster dinner in San Pedro, one of my favorite places to explore marine life–though perhaps it's best not to do that before you eat.
Find more museums and free things to do this week on our Daily Events Calendar.
1. Curious George Exhibit – Monday
The Discovery Cube LA explores all things scientific through the familiar characters and settings of Curious George. Pulleys, rocket ships, and plenty of activities await the littlest researchers.

2. Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs – Tuesday
In my experience, kids love the idea of mummies more than they enjoy seeing the real thing. The following warning is on the NHM website: “This exhibition features mummies from Egypt and Peru. It includes the human remains of adults and children, including some that are unwrapped or exposed.” Super cool, though, if you and yours are of hearty stock.

3. Preschool 101 Workshops – Wednesday
Before embarking upon a frenzy of preschool applications, do some homework. Educate yourself about the different philosophies at different schools, and ask the questions you want answered.

4. Hot Wheels: Race to Win – Thursday
The Discovery Cube in Santa Ana uses iconic kid cars to study speed.

5. Lobster Festival – Friday
Head to San Pedro for crustaceans and crossed swords; Pirate Camp is one of the highlights of the festival.
