Design, STEM and Theater: 6 More New Summer Day Camps for NYC Kids
Although we published a post about the best new camps set to debut in NYC this summer a few months back, we have since found a half-dozen additional camps worthy of highlighting. There are two new high-tech STEM options, camps for budding artists and actors, a program for young entrepreneurs, plus a popular writing program has expanded its offerings.

Writopia Lab – Tribeca

This year the veteran writing program is expanding its offerings with weekly half-day summer writing intensives in Tribeca. Aspiring authors from elementary to high school can participate in creative writing labs in the genre of their choice, and children ages 9 and up can opt to hone their essay-writing skills.

This new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) program is launching three hands-on maker camps for grade-schoolers. Each week-long session focuses on a different high-tech theme. In small groups, kids can create Minecraft mods, design video games using Scratch, build an assortment of rockets or explore robotics using Lego Mindstorms. More analog pursuits include creating comic books, stop-motion films and board games.
Design Camp – Upper East Side
Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, 2 East 91st Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues

Creative kids should love this new camp at the recently reopened Cooper Hewitt Design Museum. Each week-long session focuses on different facets of design, including architecture, graphic design, wearables and product development. Grouped by age, kids are able to explore the museum's galleries, work on design challenges and develop their skills.
Kate's Kids Acting Camp – Greenwich Village

This popular after-school theater class is hosting a day camp for aspiring actors. Kids play theater games, are introduced to improv and memorization, and learn how to ham it up in a fun environment with professional and student thespians. Each session wraps up with a short workshop where parents see the kids in action. For campers ages 9 and up, Kate's offers Shakespeare ($525/week) and improv specialty ($500/week) camps.

Fans of the television show Shark Tank are bound to enjoy this real-life entrepreneurial experience. Children ages 8 to 11 can make their dreams a reality in a two-week Design-a-Biz camp that has them creating prototypes, developing commercials and learning how to build a business. Older kids can take their ideas to the next level by joining the Summer Incubator for up to four weeks, which gets them a dedicated work space, face time with industry leaders in one-on-one sessions and group seminars. In September, interested campers can sell their businesses in a Shark Tank Pitch competition where winners can snag $2,500!

Another hands-on STEM camp! In half-day, week-long sessions, campers can try a variety of high-tech programs like coding in Minecraft, embedding circuitry in fabrics and wearables, exploring electronic sound making and working with Arduino to create cool tech projects.
