Pennsylvania has a long (and sometimes haunted!) history that lends itself to ghost stories.  Museums and historic sites around the state are committed to preserving this haunted history and the folklore of its past. While some ghost experiences are offered seasonally during the spooky month of October, you can still get your fill of family-friendly ghost outings throughout the year. 

Here's our top six haunted happenings in Philly and Pennsylvania's most historic areas, from Bucks County to Gettysburg. With this list, it can be Halloween all year round.

1. Fort Mifflin  — Philadelphia    

Fort Mifflin is a colonial fort located in Philadelphia, offering ghost investigations and ghost tours throughout the year led by a paranormal host. During October, you can take a Candlelit Ghost Tour led by a Revolutionary War soldier who shares tales of the ghosts inhabiting the fort. 

2. Ghost City Tours  — Philadelphia

Ghost City Tours offers a look at Old City Philadelphia's historic and haunted past. While lots of their tours are meant to give you the creeps, there's also a year-round tour designed specifically for families with kids ages five and up. Be sure to get those tickets in advance.

3. Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site —Philadelphia

Visit the home of Edgar Allen Poe, crafter of spine tingling tales, right here in Philly. The Edgar Allen Poe house goes beyond just a tour, inviting visitors to curl up and read or listen to their favorite tale in the Edgar Allen Poe reading room. Kids can complete a variety of activities to earn a Junior Ranger pin and certificate.

4. Philadelphia Ghost Tours — Philadelphia

Join a spooky candlelit walking tour to see the haunts in Independence Park, Old City, and Society Hill. These tours happen every night from March through November and on weekends the rest of the year. Special site-specific events occur at haunted places, like the Cruiser Olympia docked on Penn's Landing, or historic mansions like the Powel House and Physick House in Society Hill.

5. Pennsbury Manor — Morrisville, PA

Pennsbury Manor is the reconstructed country home of William Penn. The 40-acre estate along the Delaware River is loaded with history, farm animals, and even witches! In October, Pennsbury Manor offers a family trick or treating event that features a real witch trial from Pennsylvania's colonial past.  

6. Farnsworth House Inn Sleepy Hallow Ghost Tours — Gettysburg, PA

Farnsworth House Inn is a famed Bed and Breakfast located in the town of Gettysburg, where its claim to fame is all things ghost, with several guest rooms that are reportedly haunted. The inn also offers five different spooky shows for families, including a Civil War Era Magic Show, Haunted Cellar Presentation, and two different ghost tours that are offered all year.
