NYC Libraries Now Open On Saturdays

7/18/07 - By Anna Fader

It was really a bummer when the city decided to close the NYC public libraries on the weekends. With snip of the fiscal scissor, the gold standard of Saturday afternoon entertainment for toddlers and kids in NYC was suddenly gone. No longer would there be quiet Saturday afternoons reading and picking out books at the local library.

This budget change happened before my first child was library going age, so we've accepted that going to the library is something that the kids do after school with their sitter. That's the way it's always been. I've rarely been to the the library with my kids at all. So I'm pretty excited that the New York Public Library system is now extending their hours to include Saturdays. This opens up a whole new world for us. I'm looking forward to many hours together with my kids going to our local branch library and making it part of our routine. I hope everyone will use this great resource and the powers that be will keep funding for this valuable resource for NYC kids.
