Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, November 14-15: Indoor Theater and Outdoor Fun

11/12/09 - By

From one Holiday to the next, chances are your weekend is going to include some sort of Thanksgiving discussion. Less than two weeks away, this weekend might be a great time to visit one of Long Island's local poultry farms and get up close with a real live turkey, but if you're not quite ready to forge into Thanksgiving mode, there are plenty of other cool things happening out and about Long Island this weekend:

Who took Tom the Turkey
BroadHollow Theater
Saturday, November 14, 4pm
700 Hempstead Tpke, Elmont

Get in the Thanksgiving Spirit and enjoy some theater at one of our favorite family friendly theaters. With cute names like Tom the Turkey and Paula Pilgrim, kids and adults alike can enjoy a great afternoon indoors (especially if the forecast is correct). Tickets are $10 per person. Visit their website for tickets or more information.

Mini-Meterologist at Sweetbriar Nature Center
Sunday, November 15, 1pm-3:30pm
62 Eckernkamp Drive, Smithtown

We've posted about Sweetbriar Nature Center before. It is a terrific place to visit. And this event sounds really cool. You've probably heard of those wives tales about animals predicating the weather (like predicating storms or horse hair being extra thick for extra cold winters). This weekend, the educators at Sweetbriar will give you the 4-1-1 on why, plus you can learn about why the weather is what it is. With what I hear is going to be an extra wintery winter ahead, I think this sounds great. Visit their website for more information.

Crustaceans for PreSchoolers

Cornell Co-op Extension
Sunday, November 15, 10am-12pm
Sport Fishing Education Center, Babylon

Head to Babylon Sunday morning with your boots on and get up close and personal with crawling sea creatures. Specifically geared towards ages 3-5, you can learn from an educated expert about cool sea craw-lies and make a craft to take home with you. Cornel Cooperative always does a great job, and the events are usually nice and intimate. The fee of $25 includes one adult and a second adult is just $5. For more information, call 631-587-2873.

Choo Choo Soul with Genevieve
Sunday, November 15, 11am and 3pm
YMCA Boulton Center
37 West Main Street, Babylon

If you have a preschooler home between the hours of 8 and 12, and they watch tv or get on your computer, chances are you've heard of Choo Choo Soul. It is the one vignette show my son actually lives for (the rest he thinks "are in the way" of the good stuff). It is sort of a hip hop dancie show that is, of course, educational. This Sunday, head out and see Genevieve live performing her soul hits about being nice and using manners. Click here to buy tickets or for more information.
