Long Island Kids' Activities July 28 and 29: Long Island Steam Trains Open House and LVIS East Hampton Fair,

If your kids love trains like mine do, take them to the Long Island Steamers' Open House this weekend. There's also a fair in East Hampton, Rapunzel, sponsored by Kids Club 13, in Northport, the National Circus Project at the Long Island Children's Museum, and "The Dirt about Dirt"--a fun investigation of soil--at the Center for Science Teaching and Learning, among so many other activities going on this weekend. This is a wonderful fair for children, especially the smallest ones. There will be a carousel, pony rides, bouncies, and a huge shady section filled with simple carnival games for the little ones. For slightly older children there is usually a giant slide. For adults there is a thrift shop, white elephant, and a number of local vendors. A wide selection of food is offered to appeal to any palate. At 6pm there is a big community BBQ and music.

Families looking for fun, free ways to beat the heat should look no further than their local Lowe’s store. DreamWorks Animation and Lowe’s have teamed to offer families a summer of hands-on fun. Beginning June 9, Lowe’s stores nationwide will hold free movie-themed Build and Grow clinics, featuring projects from DreamWorks Animation’s hit animated films Madagascar 3Kung Fu Panda and Shrek. The special hour-long clinics, recommended for children in grades two through five, will take place on select Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. throughout the summer. Participating children will receive a kid’s apron, goggles and a take-home, customizable wooden project. Be sure to register your child at Lowes.com/BuildandGrow as spaces fill quickly!

Ride around 8 acres of tracks on a great collection of miniature steam, diesel and electric trains. Long Island Live Steamers will have their next Public Run Day on Sunday, July 29 in Southaven Park, Brookhaven, There will be future runs usually on the second and last Sundays of the month from May to October.  The full schedule is online here.
