Weekday Event Picks for LA Kids: Friday the 13th, Barks, Books, & Valentines, February 9-13

2/8/15 - By Jacqueline Stansbury

Oh the drama! What dark circumstances will emerge on Friday the 13th? Remember when you were a kid and waited all day for something bad to happen? In my house, as there’s a birthday involved, it will be a day of celebration; we are not anticipating disaster or distress. If you don’t have the distraction of a birthday, divert their attention from the day’s bad mojo by checking out our events calendar. There are many cool ways to sit out this evil day. Thursday the 12th is pretty great. It’s impossible to pick just one thing when two of the options are Mo Willems and Antique Sewing Machines.

This is exactly what it sounds like. The Pasadena Humane Society brings canine bookworms to the library for story time. Young readers can practice reading aloud to dogs. Registration is required, so be sure to check the South Pasadena Library website.

3. Slithering Snakes – Wednesday
The Los Angeles Zoo continues its “Critters ‘n Kids” program this week with the slimiest, slinkiest of all reptiles…snakes. Not for everybody, of course, but some kids (and some adults) love them.

4. Antique Sewing Machines and Mo Willems – Thursday
The Skirball Center is honoring Abraham Lincoln with a live demonstration of a hand cranked sewing machine. Sewing is all the rage these days; nice to see where it all began. Meanwhile, some picture books just never get old. In my house, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is one of those books. The author, Mo Willems, appears and signs copies of his new book, Waiting is not Easy, at Vroman's.

Celebrate St. Valentine at the Westside Pavilion with the Snow Queen, who poses for photos and sings Let it Go. This event is geared for all children and special needs children. Tickets can be purchased online.
