Free Summer Skills-Building Classes for Westchester Kids

With school over and more free time available, summer is the perfect time to learn a new skill, though we know how pricey summer fun can be with camp tuition, pool membership, vacations and so forth. That's why we’ve identified several FREE class series to help you out.

Whether your kids are looking to indulge a newfound interest, or you simply want to find a productive way to spend free time, you and your kids are sure to find something from the list below that will add extra substance to the eventual “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” recap.

MUSIC AND DANCE

Guitar Lessons with Chris Merwin - Greenburgh
Mondays: July6-July 20
Ages: Grades 4 and up
Learn basic techniques and chords at this three-week class at the Greenburgh Library. Though it’s billed as targeting teens, younger guitar virtuosos are now welcome as well. Participants must bring their own guitar (preferably acoustic) and notebook; also bring a recording device, if possible.

Mexican Dance Class - New Rochelle
Thursdays: July 9-August 22
Ages: 6-10
This opportunity to study Mexican dance is offered by the professional Calpulli Dance Troupe at the New Rochelle Public Library. Learn traditional dance styles representing various areas of Mexico. After the six-week course, participants will give a performance in costume on August 22. Registration is first-come, first-served on the first day of class.

FIBER ARTS

KNITWITS - Bedford
Wednesdays: July 8-July 29
Ages: Grades 4 and up
All levels of experience are welcome to participate in this four-week knitting class offered by the Bedford Free Library. Those who have their own knitting needles are encouraged to bring them (preferably 5.5mm); however, supplies are provided by the library, owing to the various generous souls who’ve donated to the program. Pre-registration is required. Limited spots remain, so don’t delay. Fortunately, this program will continue in the fall.

CALLIGRAPHY

Calligraphy Workshop - Rye
Mondays: July 6-July 27
Ages: Teens
Earn an “A” for penmanship after completing this four-week course on the art of calligraphy, as taught by an expert. The Rye Free Reading Room provides all supplies—and even snacks.

Calligraphy for Kids - New Rochelle
Fridays: July 10-July 31
Ages: 8-11
Learn the art of italic lettering at this workshop for kids at the New Rochelle Public Library and earn a certificate of completion at the end of the four-week session. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis on the first day of the program.

GARDENING

Adventures in Gardening - New Rochelle
Tuesdays: July 7-August 11
Ages: 6-12
Help your kids grow their green thumbs as they spend six weeks helping to grow a garden of vegetables, herbs and flowers in the New Rochelle Public Library’s garden. In addition to learning about planting, kids can participate in related activities as well. The early bird catches the worm: Registration is first-come, first-served on the first day of class.

GAME DESIGN

Video and Computer Game Design Classes - Peekskill
Wednesdays: July 22-August 5
Ages: Middle- and high-school age
Using KODU game-design software, learn to make your own video and computer games at this three-part series at the Field Library in Peekskill. Bring your own laptop if possible, or use one of the library’s. Breakfast is even provided! Register in advance.
