Why Use a Baby Wrap Carrier or Baby Sling?

Feel like cleaning or getting something out of the fridge? Take the baby along for the ride with a wrap or sling. The hands-free convenience of baby-wearing is one of the many pluses. If you are breastfeeding, many carriers help by keeping the baby close and in a convenient position to feed. You can often feed right in the wrap or sling without having to use any other covers or items.

What’s the Difference Between a Baby Wrap and a Baby Sling?

Both baby wraps and baby slings serve the same purpose: to carry a little one. But they differ slightly in how they're made and how they're worn.

Baby Wraps...

• Are usually made from long pieces of stretchy or woven fabric

• Wrap and tie around your body in a secure way to support both you and your little one

• Normally allow for various carrying positions, including front, hip, and back

Baby Slings...

• Are typically made from a single piece of fabric with rings (ring sling) or a pouch

• Most often are worn over one shoulder and are best for hip carrying

• Grow with the child and support carrying an older child

How to Use Baby Wraps and Baby Slings

When using a baby wrap, it's helpful to learn about the specific wrap style because each can be slightly different. Before baby arrives, you can practice putting on the baby wrap. If you have an older child, they may want to "help" you by practicing with one of their baby dolls.

When securing your wrap, make sure you can hold your baby close to your body without any sagging. Always keep your baby’s face visible and their chin off their chest, so they can breathe properly. A good rule of thumb is to try to kiss the top of your baby's head—when you can, you know they aren't sitting too low in the wrap.

When using a baby sling, first, you'll want to thread the sling. If you're using a ring sling, make sure the fabric is threaded through the rings correctly. Then, hold your baby in the desired position (front or hip) and adjust the sling. Pull the tail of the sling to tighten and check that your baby’s weight is evenly distributed. Ensure the sling isn’t too loose and that your baby’s head and neck are properly supported.
