Weekend Fun for NYC Kids: Luna Park Opening Day, Easter Egg Hunts, Dinosaur Safari, Children’s Carnival in Queens April 12-13

4/9/14 - By Stephanie Ogozalek

Spring break kicks off this weekend for public school kids and we're looking forward to enjoying the season in the city during our staycation. This weekend, outdoor fun includes the final days of the Queens County Farm Museum's Children's Carnival, Wave Hill's FREE Hello Spring weekend, and opening day for Coney Island's Luna Park, Prospect Park's brand-new roller rink and the Bronx Zoo's Dinosaur Safari. And with Easter coming up next Sunday, there are also a half-dozen egg hunts on tap.

Although NYC's fabulous parks and playgrounds beckon, there are some indoor events worth considering, like the Children's Museum of Manhattan's hands-on Meet the Makers Festival, a musical based on the popular children's book Mr. Chickee's Funny Money and a Passover party at the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Spring Fun Guide. Before heading out on your adventures, be sure to download our FREE Mommy Poppins Kids on the Go app so you can find the best family destinations wherever you happen to be in NYC.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

All Weekend

Mr. Chickee's Funny Money – Chelsea
One of our April Go List picks: Atlantic for Kids is behind this page-to-stage adaptation of Christopher Paul Curtis' book about kid sleuth Steve trying to solve the mystery of a quadrillion dollar bill. We're particularly excited to hear the original songs, which were cowritten by Motown great Lamont Dozier (who penned "Stop! In the Name of Love" back in the day) and his son, Paris. $20 for adults, $10 for children

Master Builder Lego Animation Workshops – Astoria
Another April Go List pick: Head to the Museum of the Moving Images to learn how to make stop-motion animated shorts using Lego bricks. Can't make it this weekend? The workshops continue throughout spring break. Admission: $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 3-12, plus a $5 materials fee

Prospect Park Roller Rink Grand Opening – Crown Heights
Brooklyn's brand-new roller rink welcomes skaters of all ages this weekend. In addition to daily public skating hours on the 16,000-square-foot covered rink, lessons and roller hockey classes are also on tap. $8, $6 for skate rental

Hello Spring Weekend – Riverdale
Welcome spring at Bronx oasis Wave Hill with guided garden tours and nature-inspired family art projects. FREE

Dinosaur Safari Opening Weekend – the Bronx
Go way back in time at the Bronx Zoo, where Dinosaur Safari returns for its second season. Expect even more roaring animatronic creatures than last year! Free with Total Experience Ticket: $33.95 for adults, $23.95 for children ages 3-12

Children’s Carnival – Glen Oaks
And another April Go List pick: It's your last chance to hit this annual favorite at the Queens County Farm Museum. Enjoy carnival rides, a midway and old-time family entertainment. $11

A Cat Who Went to Heaven – Fort Greene
See Elizabeth Coatsworth's Newbery Medal-winning book come alive on stage at BAM. Inspired by an old Buddhist folk tale, the story of the friendship between a penniless painter and a miraculous cat is told through shadow and bunraku puppetry with live music played on traditional Japanese instruments. $12

Meet the Makers Festival – Upper West Side
Drop into the Children's Museum of Manhattan's brand-new STEAM Lab (science, technology, engineering, art and math) for creative hands-on workshops like kinetic sculptures on Saturday and instrument making on Sunday. Free with admission: $11

Don Juan, or Wages of Debauchery – Upper East Side
Yes, this Czechoslovak-American Marionette Theatre production is about the romantic exploits of the title character. However, this slapstick show should be silly fun for sophisticated tweens and teens. Using the plot and some of the musical from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, it's very Punch and Judy, and Don Juan's womanizing is akin to Elmer Fudd chasing Bugs Bunny in drag. $18 for adults, $13 for children

Saturday, April 12

Prospect Heights Craft Fair – Prospect Heights
Peruse handcrafted clothing, kids' gear, jewelry and other wares at this artisan market. Kids aren't into shopping? No problem. For $5, children can participate in a bunch of fun activities like arts and crafts, science experiments, storytime with local authors and yoga, so you can browse and buy in peace. Proceeds support the hardworking students at PS 9. Free admission but there are fees for activities and wares

Easter Eggs: A Family Extravaganza – Morningside Heights
Head to the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine for its annual holiday workshop. Kids can create colorful patterns on their eggs with tissue paper, glitter, glue and paint, and then fashion a nest out of twigs, feathers and clay. Bring your own hard-boiled eggs. Preregistration is a must—the 10am session is already sold out. $8 per adult-child pair

Carl Schurz Park Egg Hunt – Upper East Side
While there are a lot of egg hunts happening around town on Saturday, the one in the lovely Carl Schurz Park is our top pick. Kids can decorate egg collecting bags on the Mayor’s Lawn before searching for ova. At noon, kindie band Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights rocks the Catbird Playground. $10 suggested donation per child

Otto the Rhino – Midtown West
Catch this charming animated Danish movie at MoMA about a young boy who finds a magic pencil that brings his drawings to life. Afterward, stay and enjoy the museum at no additional cost. FREE but tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 10am

See all Saturday events.

Sunday, April 13

Easter Egg Hunt – Corona
Celebrate Easter at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park with arts and crafts, face time with the Easter Bunny and a traditional egg hunt with amazing prizes, like a week of summer camp. $20 and preregistration is required

Easter Egg Hunt – the Bronx

ShirLaLa's Family Passover Celebration – Battery Park City
Celebrate Passover at the Museum of Jewish Heritage with a concert by kids' crooner Shira Kline and her musical pals. Holiday-themed arts and crafts, and family tours of the galleries are also on tap. $10, $7 children 10 and under

Luna Park Opening Day – Coney Island
While the beach doesn't open until Memorial Day weekend, the famed amusement park kicks off the season today. The first 100 riders to line up for the Coney Island Cyclone get to ride for FREE! It's worth dropping by nearby amusement park Deno's Wonder Wheel to watch the blessing of the rides at 11am, too. Free admission but rides cost various prices

Breakfast with the Easter Bunny – Marine Park
Head to Brooklyn's Aviator Sports for the full Easter experience. Dine on pancakes, eggs and other goodies with the Easter Bunny, enjoy cupcake decorating and holiday-themed crafts, and go on a fun-filled egg hunt. RSVP required. $22 for adults, $20 for children ages 3-12
