Free & Fun Things to Do this Weekend for NYC Kids: Maker Faire, Medieval Festival, Dumbo Arts Fest, Children's Day Sept 29-30

9/26/12 - By Stephanie Ogozalek

This is another one of those weekends when we wish we had the ability to clone ourselves. Of course if anyone can figure out human cloning, it's the inventive folks at World Maker Faire, a creative arts/tech/science fest of epic proportions. Other annual Mommy Poppins favorites this weekend include the Dumbo Arts Festival, Brooklyn's largest street fair Atlantic Antic, Fort Tryon Park's Medieval Festival and Children's Day at the South Street Seaport. By the way, those last four events are absolutely FREE.

Halloween is on the horizon and the first major event of the season, the Bronx Zoo's Boo at the Zoo, kicks off this weekend. Plus we've got the scoop on how you can visit 32 NYC culture spots for free on Saturday as part of Smithsonian Magazine's Museum Day.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Fall Fun Guide.

World Maker Faire New York 2012 – Corona
The grounds of the New York Hall of Science explode with all kinds of inventions and creations, everything from knitting to robotics, circus to interactive sculptures, computers to crafts. Many exhibitors host hands-on activities for all ages. Last year we saw kids deconstructing computers, weaving bracelets, doing circus tricks, playing with remote-control robots, building complicated structures out of intricate oversize blocks and much, much more. The Young Makers are particularly inspiring, with kids showing off their cutting-edge and kooky projects. And everyone loves the life-size working replica of the Mouse Trap board game. Read our in-depth post for more info and a list of tips about doing Maker Faire with kids. $27.50 for adults, $12 for children ages 2-17; at the door: $30 and $15 respectively.

Boo at the Zoo is wildly popular so expect crowds. All activities are free with Total Experience Tickets: In advance: $29.95 for adults, $19.95 for children 3-12; at the door: $32.95 and $22.95 respectively.

Last Weekend for Governors Island – Governors Island
The art-filled isle closes for the season on Sunday. So it's your last chance to play a free game of mini-golf, romp in the interactive sculpture garden, take a leisurely car-free bike ride, picnic on the grassy lawns and enjoy gorgeous views of lower Manhattan until 2013.
