NJ Weekend events May 21-22: Fairies, Fashionistas, Fireman’s Fair, and Festival of Children, mostly FREE!

There's a ton of fun to be had in NJ this weekend (if the weather decides to cooperate), so grab the offspring and head out for ocean fun, a children's festival, a family fun day, a tea for your junior fasionista, a fairy festival... okay, the "f'" alliteration is getting to be a bit much. But have a fiesta anyway!

Submerge yourself at the Museum this weekend, with Underwater Treasures on Saturday, May 21 and Shipwrecks on Sunday, May 22, both at 2pm. Saturday you’ll find out about the ship Atocha’s dramatic history and buried treasure, and Sunday, author Margaret Buchholz reads from her book New Jersey Shipwrecks: 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Sounds creepy and fun. Space is limited.  Pre-registration is strongly recommended; call 973-377-2982x14.  Free with regular admission of $5/Adults, $3/Kids.

Fireman’s Fair (Sea Bright)

One of the first real fairs of the summer (okay, rainy cold spring) season, the annual Fireman’s Fair has carnival rides, games of chance, live music, food, drinks and a 50/50 raffle drawing. 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday, May 21; and 2- 9 p.m. Sunday, May 22. Ocean Fun Days

(Sandy Hook and Island Beach State Park)

Explore the shore with the kiddos. Enjoy exhibits, classes, nature tours, and children's activities all about our coastal environment. May 21 is at Island Beach State Park, May 22 is at NJ Sea Grant Consortium. Both locations 11:00AM - 3:00PM

Relay for Life (Hoboken)

If you’ve never heard of the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, it’s an amazing and unusual fundraiser. Teams of people take turns walking or running around a track or path for up to 24 hours to honor those who are fighting cancer or to remember those who have lost their battle. This Saturday it’s Hoboken’s turn to participate. May 21, 2011 11AM to 11PM at Pier A Park. Montclair Art Museum Family Free Day

We love “free” and we love art, so we’re always happy when they come together. Participate in a day of exploration with art activities and see MAM’s current exhibition: Warhol and Cars: American Icons. Sunday, May 22, 1 to 5 pm. Call 973- 746-5555 for more info.

The Spring Festival of Children (Jersey City)

Young Fashionista Tea (Morristown)

Have a mini-fashion-lover at home? Visit the exhibition, On the Head and in the Hand: Hats and Purses from the Morris Museum Collection; hear fashion tips and design ideas, decorate a handbag and then have Tea in the museum's elegant Dodge Room, where cupcakes and beverages, including Shirley Temples, will be served. Calendar for Kids Family Fun Day (Long Branch)

Games, sporting activities, manicures, tattoos, yummy treats, give-a-ways and samples.  But the big news is that they’ll be raffling off a family vacation for 4 to Universal Studios (pre-register for extra entries). May 21, 2010 (rain date May 22nd) from 10 am to 3 pm.  

Touch-A-Truck (Paramus)

Even the girl-children will like this one. Climb on and “touch” trucks in a safe, supervised environment.  Take a few pictures, have some free refreshments; you’ve got yourself a fun family day. Sunday, May 22 from 10am to 3pm. Admission $20 for four entry passes.  

Fairy Festival (Budd Lake)

Come dressed up and visit with the Tooth Fairy, make fairy wands, decorate your own Fairy Cupcakes, hear some fairy stories at Mt. Olive Public Library and have a Fairy Pony Ride. Hmmm… fairies or trucks? Saturday, May 21 10am to 2pm. FREE.
