Openings and Closings: Wegmans grocery store chain has announced plans for a 74,000-square-foot market in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The store is the chain's first NYC location and anchors a larger shopping center along Admiral's Row. In addition to providing fresh, affordable food, Wegmans plans to hire locally—with the first two weeks of interviewing comprised of candidates from the three housing developments bordering the Navy Yard. Doors are expected to open in 2017.

It's been a rough year for iconic toy stores. Not long after Toys "R" Us announced it would close its flagship Times Square store, the company has also given word that FAO Schwarz (which it owns) will shutter its Fifth Avenue location on July 15 due to rising rents. TRU hopes to relocate both stores somewhere in Manhattan, but the where and when remain up in the air.

Sadly things haven't been any better for smaller shops, either. We recently received news that the Tribeca outpost of the beloved HomBom Toys has closed. The Upper East Side and Upper West Side locations remain open.

Bye-Bye Styrofoam Lunch Trays: Great news on the environmental front: many NYC public schools have switched to eco-friendly compostable trays, and all public schools will use them by the time the next academic year starts.

Bike Randall's Island: Weekend bike rentals have arrived on Randall's Island. The program, operated by Blazing Saddles, the same company that provides bikes on Governors Island, will be open only on weekends throughout the summer. Prices start at $10 per hour for child-size bikes, and $14 per hour for adult gear. The Blazing Saddles outpost is located in the shadow of the RFK Bridge near the Harlem River Pathway. As an added perk, if you don't want to deal with bridge traffic, consider taking advantage of discounted parking at the River Crossing apartments at 1956 First Avenue, and walking over the 103rd Street Pedestrian Bridge to the isle.

Enter the Lottery for Cheap STEM Camps: The Department of Education is teaming up with iconic NYC sites to offer lucky students affordable, STEM-filled summer experiences. A series of STEM enrichment programs will be offered at locales like the Queens Zoo, the New York Aquarium and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Applications are due by June 12 for these week-long camps, which cater to kids in grades 1 to 8. If your child wins a spot, expect to pay just $20 for the program!

New York Pops Caters to More Kids this Summer: The New York Pops will perform a pair of summer concerts at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on August 6 and 7. The best news for families, though, is that the larger outdoor venue will allow the Pops to expand its popular Kids in the Balcony program to 1,000 children. The initiative regularly provides 100 tickets to Pops' concerts at Carnegie Hall and sponsors pre- and post-concert teaching artist sessions so children can learn about the orchestra.

The Met Welcomes Teens Again: In the fall, we told you about the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Teens Take the Met night and heard rave reviews from some teens and parents in our circles. The program was such a success that the Met is offering another teen-only evening on Friday, June 5!

Upper Manhattanites Face a Brighter Commute: A new public art project has beautified the tunnel leading to the 191st Street 1 subway station—a welcome changed for residents. Local artists transformed the formerly dingy, dark tunnel into a bright oasis with positive messages such as "Follow your dreams" and "Today is your day." The Department of Transportation also added LED lighting and a regular cleaning schedule to improve conditions in the busy passageway.

A Line-Free Way to Cheap Tix: We're big fans of getting out and enjoying all the culture the city has to offer, especially when we can do it on the cheap.
