Kid Activities in the Hamptons and North Fork This Weekend, June 1-2

The beaches are open and it looks like the weather will be complying for once. But if you can tear yourself away from the sea, you might want to check out some of the fun goings-on this weekend: a community festival in Riverhead, a boat show in Greenport, a barn dance in Hallockville, lots of ways for get closer to nature, and more. Read on to find out our best sets for this weekend.

June Storywalk: Crab Moon by Ruth Horowitz
Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, Any time between 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Mashomack Preserve, 79 South Ferry Rd, Shelter Island Come for a short self-guided half-mile hike and read a story as you go! Under the full moon on a June night, Daniel’s mother wakes him up to see the extraordinary sight of horseshoe crabs spawning on the beach, just as they have every spring for millions of years. Phillips Avenue Elementary School Community Festival
10AM - 3PM Phillips Avenue Elementary School, 141 Phillips Avenue, Riverhead
Popular kid crooner Brady Rymer headlines this school fundraising festival taken to the hilt. Expect a BMX stunt show, a petting zoo, a bike rodeo (bring your own bike), a Chinese auction, games, vendors, food, and more. $5 admission per person

Third Annual Boat Show
All Day
Mitchell Park Marina, Front Street, Greenport
The whole family will enjoy a day at Greenport Village viewing the boats at the annual in-water and on-land boat show in Mitchell Park. You can explore the boats, ride the carousel, do some shopping, and pick up and ice cream cone or sit down for a nice lunch or dinner at one of the many family friendly restaurants.   Some activities may require a small fee.

Barn Dance to benefit East End Livestock & Horseman's Association
6:30pm - 9pm 
Hallockville Museum Farm, 6038 Sound Ave., Riverhead, NY 11901 
Ready for a hoedown? Enjoy a live band and traditional caller at this barn dance to raise funds for EELHA's Rescue and Scholarship Funds. All ages welcome. $20; free for children younger than 5

Exotic Animal Education
11am-4pm
Long Island Science Center, 11 West Main St. , Riverhead, NY 11901
Science Saturdays at the Long Island Science Center covers a different theme each week. This Saturday learn about exotic animals from around the world through activities and crafts. All ages. $5

Beach Scavenger Hunt 
10:30 am 
East Hampton
The ever-changing tides carry a diverse range of natural and unnatural objects up on to the beach each day. Meet Molly, at low tide, for a scavenger hunt where you will complete a puzzle by finding natural objects such as shells, gull feathers, and maybe even a mermaid’s purse! After everyone has finished their collection, you’ll share what you find with the group and learn how everything is interconnected. Reservations required: (631) 537-9735 Ages 3-5 years old. June 2nd

Mon Tiki -Fundraising Sail out of Montauk 
A locally built seaworthy catamaran built by hand of sustainable eco-friendly materials  will be setting sail on 45-minute cruises to raise funds to bring the live music of the Hampton Chamber Orchestra to the Hampton Ballet Theatre School 2013 production of Peter and the Wolf. Trips will depart every hour from 12PM until 6PM from Diamond Cove Marina in Montauk NY, $20 p/p.  100% of the proceeds from this one-day event will go to Hampton Ballet Theater School performance at the Montauk Playhouse on Thursday, July 25. 631-668-2826, 

St Isidore's School 1st Annual Car Show
8am - 5pm
St Isidore's School, 515 Marcy Avenue, Riverhead, NY
Have a car lover? This judged car show will also have food, vendors, music, entertainment and a 50.50 raffle. All proceeds benefit St Isidore's School.  Adults $10, Children under 12 free. Rain Date, June 9.
