Frolic! Play Space: Williamsburg's New Rock 'n' Roll Tot Spot

Sadly this play space closed in September 2014. Frolic!, Williamsburg's new rock 'n' roll-themed romping spot for preschoolers, has gotten an incredible amount of buzz since it opened last month. Although as of now the awesome play space is reserved for members, non-members can sign up for Frolic!'s cool classes, which are led by talented New York City artists. Since my daughter is such a big music fan, we just had to check it out.

Opened by Carey Balogh and Julia Dawson, two local moms and neighbors, this 5,000-square-foot facility features vibrant, psychedelic colors, high ceilings, a sleek design and classic rock-inspired play equipment, like a paint-splattered VW bus and a Rolling Stones' tongue slide. It's the kind of place that really taps into your kids' creativity and imagination.

Frolic!'s extensive classes include music, art, dance and tumbling, language, yoga and imaginative fare like Super Hero Adventure. The offerings are aimed at children ages 6 months to 6 years, and you don't need a membership to enroll. Prices start at $420 per semester per class, and private one-on-one piano, guitar or drum lessons for children ages 5 and up are also available.

The music classes are definitely a main attraction here. Frolic!'s Little Rock-its class was created by Tim Kubart of the upbeat kids' band Tim and the Space Cadets, so it's gotten a lot of attention. I decided to bring my preschooler to the AudraRox Musical Theater class, led by local family rocker Audra Tsanos. During the session, my daughter got to do a lot more than just sing. With Audra's guidance, she pretended to be a frog, an elephant, a racing car and a helicopter, and she practiced facial expressions and emotions. Audra sang and played the acoustic guitar and had kids act out stories through the tunes.

Frolic! also has a cool coffee lounge with comfy seating, fresh roasted organic coffee from Rook Coffee Roasters and snacks for purchase. It's also members only, but if you register for a class, you can hang out here for a bit before and after. Like many play spaces these days, Frolic! also has a boutique with children's clothes, small gifts and instruments. The bathrooms have changing tables and there's stroller parking in the back, along with shoe cubbies and coat hooks.

Unfortunately, even kids enrolled in classes don't get access to the 1500-square-foot play space, which is a shame since it's really incredible. Kids need to remove their shoes to play on the cushy rug, home to soft magic mushrooms to hop on, that Rolling Stones tongue slide and Ziggy Starbus, a VW bus with a working horn and pedals that make noise. My daughter really enjoyed relaxing in the back of the van, complete with mood lighting. She also loved jamming on the concert stage, singing and playing bongo drums. There's a small lounge couch in the "backstage" area and a box office window. My kid had the best time selling me imaginary tickets. For babies, there's a separate soft infant play area featuring a round, tub-like unit with window cutouts.

Right now, membership packages start at $85 per month with a year-long commitment, plus tax. This includes immediate family and caregivers. Membership gets you unlimited access to the play space, the coffee lounge, various discounts and free weekly members-only activities like storytime and Creature Symphony, an interactive video wall installation where kids can move their bodies or touch the cute creatures to make musical sounds. If you want to check out the place before you commit, you can buy a first-time visitor preview pass for $25 per child (siblings are $15). And of course, Frolic! has a variety of birthday party packages, too.
