Fun and Free Things to Do with Kids in Boston - Zoorassic Park Opening, Play Date, Beauty and the Beast and More

It’s a long holiday weekend, and there are plenty of fun and free things to do with kids in and around Boston, from Discovery Day in Lexington and the Zoorasic Park Grand Opening at the Franklin Park Zoo to the Run to Remember Expo and Play Date at the ICA. And please be sure to see our special Memorial Day activities post for special events happening on Monday, including an Open House at the MFA, the Garden of Flags tribute on the Boston Common, and the Faneuil Hall Street Performer Festival. Lexington Discovery Day - Muzzy Street, Lexington
Sat 5/26

The annual festival begins with a street fair and sidewalk sale from 10am-3pm and concludes with an outdoor concert by the “NoWheremen”, a local Beatles cover band, at 3:30pm in Depot Square. Local restaurants sell a variety of foods.

Free LEXPRESS rides will help alleviate traffic around the center and to give new riders a chance to try out the bus service. For those driving, there is free parking at all Lexington Center parking meters and in the Meriam Street Lot. FREE


Run to Remember Expo and Run - Seaport World Trade Center, Boston
Sat 5/26 & Sun 5/27

The Boston Police Department and Boston Police Runner’s Club hosts the sixth Run To Remember, honoring Massachusetts Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty by celebrating their lives and giving back to the community.

Saturday and Sunday: Sports and Fitness Expo: over 30 exhibitors offering great savings, new product samples, nationally recognized athletes and service providers. Children’s activities include jump rooms, clowns, K-9 demonstrations, story telling, kids safety programs and more. Sat 9am-5pm; Sun 6am-12n.

Saturday: Kids Fun Runs begin at 10am on top of the Seaport World Trade Center. There is no entry fee and all finishers receive an official finisher’s ribbon. You do not have to sign up in advance, simply come to the starting line between 9:30am and 10am on Saturday morning. Races begin at promptly 10am.

Sunday: Half-marathon begins at the Seaport World Trade Center, through Fanueil Hall, the Boston Common, by the State House and along the Charles River. Expo free; Kids runs free; Marathon free to watch


Zoorassic Park Grand Opening - Franklin Park Zoo, Boston
Opens Sat 5/26

Zoo visitors are immersed in a prehistoric journey through time at Franklin Park Zoo’s Zoorassic Park, as they journey around a large pond with more than 15 moving, roaring, life-like animatronic dinosaurs, including the imposing Tyrannosaurus rex. Kids can also pretend they are paleontologists at the nearby Dino Dig where they can “dig” for recreations of fossils and bones. Admission + $3


All Hands on Deck: USS Constitution Museum Family Fun - USS Constitution Museum, Charlestown
Sat 5/26 - Mon 5/28

Learn about the life of Marines and sailors at sea by learning to march, deciding whether to “sign on” to Constitution, and taking part in other demonstrations and craft activities. Discover Constitution’s history with the new exploratory activity, Mutinous Expedition: A Quest Based on Honest Truth. FREE


Exhibit Opening: Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body - EcoTarium, Worcester

Sometimes it’s stinky; sometimes it’s crusty; and sometimes it’s slimy. Explore why your body produces mushy, oozy, crusty, scaly and stinky gunk in Grossology: The (Impolite) Science of the Human Body. Based on the best-selling book Grossology this exhibition uses sophisticated animatronics and imaginative exhibits to tell you the good, the bad and the downright ugly about runny noses, body odor and other icky things that everyone experiences. Watch Out for Vulture Vomit and Other Adventures in Bird Watching - Harvard Museum of Natural History, Cambridge

Bird watching isn’t just for adults anymore. Kids and teens are getting hooked on nature through birds, and birders of all ages can enjoy this humorous and engaging presentation by Bill Thompson III, author of the new Peterson Field Guide, The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America (Houghton Mifflin). Free with admission


Play Date: Making Spaces and Places - ICA - Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston
Sun 5/27

After a family walking tour to learn more about our building, its unique design, the changing waterfront neighborhood, and the city of Boston, realize your ideas for the city or neighborhood of your dreams.

Manipulate a small-scale, interactive model of Boston, guided by urban planner James Rojas; view architecture and design-related family films; and take part in our hands-on design challenges. ICA installation, then test their artistic skills and global knowledge by helping artist Amy Beth Harrison create an installation adorned with wishes for a cleaner environment. Using bamboo, cloth, and cut paper, each family will also create a miniature sculpture to take home, containing messages and symbols for a healthy planet. Free for families: up to two adults per family accompanied by children ages 6–12


Beauty and the Beast - Boston Opera House, Boston

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to his former self. But time is running out.
