NJ Weekend Events for Kids June 5-6: Fairy Festivals, Firetrucks, and Free Zoo Admission

Whether your little one likes to wear fairy wings or a fire helmet, this weekend New Jersey has the perfect event for you!  Festivities include a Fairy Festival, a Firetruck Parade, a Strawberry Festival, Dairy Day at the Farm, a celebration for Jersey boy Thomas Edison, an art party at Grounds for Sculpture, a Funfest for both kids and adults, and even a Tot Trot.  Too many choices?   Just forget the festivals and take advantage of a day of FREE admission to the Turtleback Zoo or lay low at one of the many "Get Out New Jersey!" events at the state parks.

Fairy Festival at Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed (Pennington)
Calling all fairies!  Come dressed in your fairy best to celebrate the arrival of the Rainbow Fairies, Woodland Fairies and Water Sprites.  Fairies and gnomes will dance, make fairy crafts to take come, build fairy villages and gnome homes, play with water sprites in the Stony Brook, and enjoy bubbles and other fairy fun!  Saturday from 9am to noon.  $5 per person or $15 per family.

Anniversary Arts Party at Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton)
The sculpture park is celebrating their anniversary with a day of hands on fun and entertainment.  There will be kid-friendly workshops such as community quilt making and monoprinting (for kids 6-12), music and dance performances, recycled craft projects, the painting of a car by a graffiti artist, a peacock calling contest, meet-the-artist tours, and free ice cream, cake, lollipops and pinwheels (while supplies last).  Saturday from 11am to 4pm.  Free with admission which is $12 for adults, $8 for kids 6 to 12, 5 and under free.  Please note that no outside food is permitted at Grounds for Sculpture - food options on location include a fine restaurant, outdoor cafe, and gazebo that sells snacks.

Edison Day at Thomas Edison National Historical Park (West Orange)
Big and little inventors will get their gears in motion at this celebration for one of America's most celebrated inventors, who happens to be from New Jersey!  Kids can earn their Junior Ranger Badge by exploring Thomas Edison's home, laboratory, and even his garage to see some old electric cars dating back to the early 1900s.  You can even watch how recordings of live musicians are made on a wax cylinder phonograph just as they would have been over 100 years ago.  The event ends with an evening concert by the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra on the lawn of the Glenmont Estate.  Saturday from 10am on, with the concert starting at 6pm.  FREE

Open House at Turtle Back Zoo (West Orange)
Who needs an excuse to go to the zoo when it is FREE!  On Saturday not only can you visit this fabulous zoo for free, but the zoo also hosts their Annual Essex County Open House with special family-friendly activities, giveaways, and games.  Saturday from 10am to 2pm.  FREE.  There is a nominal fee for carousel rides, pony rides, and feed sticks at the aviary ($2 per ride or per stick).

Dairy Day at Howell Living History Farm (Lambertville)
Warm summer weather is reason enough to learn more about ice cream.  This weekend at Howell Living Historical Farm you can do just that.  On Dairy Day tour the farm, meet milking goats, help make cheese, churn butter and most importantly see how ice cream is made.  Saturday from 11am to 3pm.  Cheesemaking is at 11am, ice cream making at 2pm, milking at 11:30, 12:30 and 1:30, and butter churning throughout the day.  FREE.  A children's craft project, making a bug cage, is available for a small materials fee of $3.

Annual Antique Fire Apparatus Muster & Parade at the Newark Museum (Newark)
The Newark Fire Department Historical Association is parading their finest old firetrucks this weekend at the Newark Museum.  There will be a parade of trucks and the Newark Firefighters' Pipe Band, food, a trophy presentation, a firematic flea market, and more.  And that's before you have even walked into the museum to see the exhibits or make your own model fossil or totem pole!  Sunday from noon to 3pm.  Free with admission, which is $10 for adults, $6 for kids.

Tot Trot: Kids Running For Kids (Summit)
Little runners, on your marks!  The Tot Trot is a day of fun including moon bounces, a petting zoo, games, and of course a fun race!  All participants get a medal, tshirt, and goody bag.  Ages 2 - 7.  Sunday from 11am on, with races beginning at 1pm sharp.  Registration is $12 by June 4, $15 day of the race. 

OLG Funfest (Hoboken)
Biergarten and kids events at the same location?  That's right!  The OLG Funfest kicks off Saturday night from 6pm to 10pm with music and food, but Sunday is the day that the kids entertainment is abound with a performance by Kimmy Schwimmy, puppet shows, pony rides, a Jurassic Survivor Obstacle Course Moon Bounce, and baseball sports arena game among other things (like the Biergarten).  Saturday from 6pm to 10pm, Sunday from 10am to 7pm.

Get Outdoors New Jersey! (state-wide)
Did you know that June has been named "Great Outdoors Month" by the NJ Parks?  All month long parks across the state host fun and interactive outdoor events including free fishing, panning for gold, geocaching, canoe tours, crafts and more.  Check out the full calendar of events.
