Spring festivities are kicking into high gear, so get your calendars ready! We've rounded up the best things to do in New York City with kids in April—many of them FREE.

Families can finally get outdoors: Don't miss the annual Children’s Carnival at the Queens County Farm Museum, the spectacular Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival, the Brooklyn Folk Festival, Street Games in East Harlem, and Sakura Matsuri in Brooklyn and more bloom sightings.

If you're looking for a few more indoor activities (Northeast weather is unpredictable in April), EarthFest at the American Museum of Natural History features an incredible lineup of performances and parties, and there are a number of can't-miss children's shows this spring, including a page-to-stage adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, and the further adventures of the four-legged heroes of Nick Jr.'s Paw Patrol.

April marks the start of the spring festival season, which includes the annual Sheep-to-Shawl, full of woolly fun. April is also loaded with numerous Earth Day activities, such as Green Ossining’s Earth Day Festival, plus various clean-up days, crafts, and celebrations.

This is also a good month for family-friendly performances, including Rosie Revere, Engineer. Fans of comics and anime can get their fill at the White Plains Comic Fest.

If you’re looking for Y Healthy Kids Day, traditionally held in April, note that this year’s event will take place in May, and Colonial Day will be held in June.

There's a new kid-friendly museum on the block! CuriousCity, a pop-up children's museum, opens Sunday, March 31st in Peabody, and after an exclusive sneak peek just before opening day, we learned that this new addition to our region of world-class museums is worth a visit—and soon. For just three months, this children's museum will occupy the George Peabody House Museum & Peabody Leather Workers Museum in the downtown area, offering kids seven different exhibits that invite learning, creative play, and interactive fun. We on Long Island are blessed with four distinct seasons, and April, of course, begins the transition to warmer weather and outdoor activities. By the end of April's 30 days we will have experienced Easter Sunday, Passover, the return of leaves to our trees, and even baseball played on our Little League fields. Ever since my son could read, he's been a history buff. Our family tree is filled with brave men who have served our country, so military history has always been a subject close to his heart. We've loved exploring the city's National Parks and Monuments and learning about the storied military past of Governors Island together, but nothing has sparked his curiosity or inspired as many return visits as the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

A decommissioned Essex-class air craft carrier, the Intrepid is a floating museum docked in the Hudson River at Pier 86. It was commissioned in 1943 and served a varied history spanning from WWII to the space age. During WWII, it survived a torpedo strike and five kamikaze attacks. Later it was used in the Cold War, as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s and as a "special attack carrier" in Vietnam. Decommissioned in 1974, the Intrepid was saved from the scrapyard and converted into a museum in the early 80s. It was remodeled between 2006-08 and returned to Pier 86 as the museum we know today.
