Happy New Year! Coffee, Pumpkins, and Culture: This Week's Picks September 22-26
A week that starts with free coffee and ends with the unburdening of a year’s worth of wrongs is all good. McDonald’s is giving away java with no purchase required. The Jewish New Year is on Thursday, which means many schools will be closed. Your kids probably won’t even have homework. Check the Mommy Poppins event calendar for things to do on Thursday, or consider an outing to the L.A. County Fair. Whether or not you are Jewish, it is a great day to head to the beach, but in Venice the holiday celebration Tashlich by the Sea is one way for a family to celebrate the culture of Judaism, if not the actual religion. Speaking of cultural, end the week on Friday at the San Gennaro Festival in Hollywood.
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
1.Tangled – Monday
Pass by McDonald’s for a free cup of Joe, then head to Disney’s El Capitan where Tangled has been re-released. The characters of Sofia and Rapunzel appear before and after the show. While this is not a free event, a trip to El Capitan is always worth the price of admission. Check the calendar for special shows and events.
2. Club Day – Tuesday
Sometimes malls are a place where moms can work out for free. This week, the takeaway is that malls are a place where kids can party for free. In Glendale (at the Galleria or the Americana), Calabasas, and Marina Del Rey, there are Tuesday Kids clubs offering a variety of entertainment and activities. Check individual schedules for specifics. Remember when “clubbing” meant something entirely different?
3. Pick a Pumpkin – Wednesday
Before you ask: no, it's not too early. Some pumpkin patches are already open, most notably the popular Irvine Park patch, with its accompanying Pumpkin Train. The patch itself has no admission charge, but there is a charge to drive into the park ($3 weekdays), and entertainment like the train, the hay ride, and the bounce house cost $5 a pop. Going down on a weekday has its perks, though: not only can you get in ahead of the crowds, but you can also use the weekday 2-for-1 train coupon (be sure to print it out before you go).
4. Tashlich by the Sea – Thursday
Celebrate the New Year with a symbolic unburdening of last year’s baggage. Participants head to the sea, dressed in white, and toss stale bread into the waves, figuratively casting away a year’s worth of wrongs. Though specifically a Jewish tradition, all are welcome to participate. Kids can enjoy the blaring of a Shofar, and percussion instruments are encouraged.
5. Feast of San Gennaro – Friday
This weekend festival celebrates Italian food and culture. Jimmy Kimmel plans to make an appearance. There will be bocce and genealogy and multiple events throughout the weekend; Friday is just the beginning!
