Shakespeare's As You Like It at the VA's Japanese Garden

7/17/12 - By Roberta B

If there's one city in the world that deserves more Shakespeare in the park than any other, surely it's ours. Oh, yes, London may be Shakespeare's 'hood, and New York has that awfully famous park, but we've got something infinitely more important: the weather. No need to suffer for our art here; when Angelenos see theater al fresco on a summer evening it is a pure delight - it is, in fact, As You Like It.

If you can't quite remember the plot of As You Like It, allow us to refresh your memory: it's that Shakespeare play in which everyone at court runs off to the woods, and the heroine dresses up as a man for half the evening. Does that not narrow it down enough? Well, we could mention the famous "All the world's a stage" speech - or we could just point out what really matters: that the story is mostly light-hearted, no one dies, lots of people marry, and they all live happily ever after. Between the gentle tale and the beautiful outdoor setting, The Shakespeare Center's As You Like It makes a fine night out and a good intro to Shakespeare for kids. There are, admittedly, a lot of characters to keep track of, but they're all played with such energy and fun that tracking them is not a chore. And, as a bonus to Star Trek fans with a penchant for Klingons, Michael Dorn plays a pair of estranged dukes.

Without spoiling the evening's breathtaking set surprise, kudos must be given to the creative team for absolutely lovely use of the surrounding trees. Combining a rustic, pastoral setting with comfortable stadium seating is an accomplishment to be appreciated, and the entrance along a winding garden path lit with fairy lights sets the tone delightfully. The grounds open at 6:30pm for families wanting to bring a picnic to enjoy before the show, and there's even a little bridge for playing Pooh sticks before settling down. The whole experience feels very far from the intersection of Wilshire Blvd. and the 405.

The cast is full of energy and fun, and the show keeps up a good pace that leaves no reason for squirming; As You Like It is a marvelous opportunity for the whole family to enjoy an evening of theater. And perhaps one of the best things about the production is that it brings the Shakespeare in the park experience to an easily accessible location with (get this) free parking right smack in the middle of the Westside. That's definitely as we like it!

As You Like It plays Tuesday through Sunday evenings, through July 29, 2012.
