Preparing for Passover: LA's Bakeries for Unleavened Passover Desserts
What makes this holiday different from all other holidays? The cookies! Or rather, the lack of cookies. As the people "chosen" to eat unleavened bread know, Passover is a holiday about, above all, complicated recipes. The holiday of, "Don't let them eat cake." The holiday of, "Mom! Why is there matzo in my lunch box again??" Grandma handed down her miraculous recipe for a honey cake that rises by sheer force of will, but failed to hand down the time required to pull it off. So, for the reality check mom, we offer a list of some of our favorite local bakeries that leave out the leavening in all sorts of yummy treats at this time of year.

Delice Bakery
8583 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, California 90035

Fine French Kosher Bakery - who knew? Well, actually a whole bunch of people knew, which is why this place is so incredibly popular at this time of year. The prices are high, but if you've ever tried to make a baked good rise without leavening, you'll probably forgive them and buy one of their fabulous creations anyway. Moses would.
Schwartz Bakery
433 N. Fairfax Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90036
323.653.1683
We won't waste your time describing a menu this thorough; just check out the list of Kosher for Passover items for yourself. It's flat-out mind-blowing (very flat...). If you can think of an unleavened baked good these folks don't make, we dare you to bake it yourself. Schwartz has five locations - and no, they're NOT all on Pico or Fairfax. These folks look after the Pesach needs of the Valley, too.
Eilat Bakery
350 N. Fairfax ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90036
323.933.5000
Why not go ahead and just call it A Lot Bakery - it's pronounced the same and gets more directly to the point. Yes, when it comes to Passover, this bakery bakes a lot. You could get a sugar high just looking at the pictures on the Passover Menu. Oh - and, in addition to the Fairfax location, Eilat also has a bakery on - that's right - Pico...
Beverlywood Bakery
9128 West Pico Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035
310.278.0122
This one might not qualify for the most observant Jew's shopping list, but Beverlywood nonetheless offers what most folks would consider classic Jewish baking; and come Passover, the shelves are filled with items from Grandma's recipe box. If unleavened and familiar qualifies for your Passover table, these folks can put a smile on your punim.
Finally, if you're looking for something a little different and NOT made from matzo meal, this can be a great time of year to sample a wheat-free treat from a gluten-free bakery. Rising Hearts Bakery in Culver City is entirely gluten-free and certified Kosher - which for many items adds up to Kosher for Passover, even if it doesn't officially say so on the package.
