Wondering how exactly small children learn a second language in a program like this one, especially if they are entering without any foreign language experience? SLA teachers are trained in a scaffolded immersion model, in which they consciously weave key structures and vocabulary into their speech, so that the target language continually builds on itself for maximum fluency. In preschool, English is used only as needed to explain important safety rules in the classroom. During first and second grades, English is introduced daily to make sure students have a strong foundation in English literacy. Then, as children move through the grade levels, the balance of the languages shifts. By the time they reach the upper grades, students are reading in both languages and using French or Mandarin in all of their daily discussions, projects, and written work.

In addition to the strong focus on language, SLA offers a science- and math-infused, arts-integrated curriculum that's guided by current brain-development research. Students explore science through observation labs set up in every classroom; learn math principles with hands-on materials; and take part in dance, music, and movement classes, as well as visual arts instruction. Daily physical activity is also a high priority, with the kids spending an hour outside at a local park every day. With its child-centered learning approach and low student-teacher ratio, the program can be even further tailored to each individual child's needs.
