Weekend Events in New Jersey, February 5-6: Groundhog Day Party, FREE museums, a Winter’s Day on the Farm and more!

2/3/11 - By Shari Simpson

Let’s face it: no groundhog with a shred of common sense is going to be poking his head out in this weather. But we can dream, can’t we? (and celebrate the no-show). Of course, if you’re still loving the romance of snow and ice, you can spend a winter’s day on the farm at Fosterfield’s, or be like the rest of us winter-weary souls and duck inside to a variety of cool museums with FREE admission this weekend. Have a great weekend and never fear, spring is coming (in about six weeks)!

Groundhog Day Celebration (Hopewell)

The Stonybrook Millstone Watershed is still going to have their furry friend celebration, regardless if their groundhogs are frozen or not. Hike the trails, play a hibernation game, learn about the mighty ‘hog—but come dressed for the weather. Saturday, February 5, 10:30am to 12pm. $5 suggested donation per person. Registration required, call 609-737-7592.

Fancy Nancy and other Storybooks (Branchburg)

The always-reliable TheatreWorks USA presents an all-new musical made up of a bunch of mini-musicals based on best-selling children’s books like Duck for President, Fancy Nancy and Pirates Don’t Change Diapers. This seems like a great first theatrical experience for your mini-novice-theater-goer. Sunday, February 6 at 1pm and 3:30pm. Tickets $10 and $12. Call 908-725-3420 for tickets and information.

Free First Sundays at the Zimmerli (New Brunswick)

We love FREE, don’t we? Especially when it’s a cool place like the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum. Free every first Sunday of the month, you get tours, activities, and scavenger hunts offered in both English and Spanish. The Zimmerli has a great kids’ exhibition running, called Animal Fair: Birds, Beasts, and Bugs in Children’s Book Illustrations. Sunday, February 6 from 12pm to 5pm. 732-932-7237.

Winter’s Day on the Farm (Morristown)

If you can’t beat winter, join it. Spend a day at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm having fun with a tractor-pulled wagon ride, maple tapping, cracking corn, collecting eggs and churning butter. You can also see an ice-harvesting. Whatever that might be. Sunday, February 6, 12pm to 4pm. $6/Adults, $4/Children. 973-326-7645.

Little Red Riding Hood (Hoboken)

The Hoboken Public Library is a little treasure for kids and families in the Mile Square City. On February 5 at 2pm, Youth Stages will bring Little Red to life; the junior audience members get a chance to play the red-coated-Grandma-visiting girl while the actors play the other characters. FREE. 201-420-2348.

Starfish Concert (Maplewood)

The homegrown Maplewood kids rock band, Starfish, plays their 5th annual concert at St. George’s church. Come rock out with Stingray, Dr. Yes, AntFarm, Grateful Dave and Moose. Saturday, February 5 at 2pm. Call 973-539-7853 for more information.
