The balmy days of early autumn are now behind us and the cooler weather is here to stay. Wondering what to do with the kids now that it’s too cold to hit the playground most days? We’ve got the scoop on super-fun indoor play spaces to help you survive the winter months ahead. Color Me Mine (Denville)
Looking for something creative to do with the kids during the long winter days? Color Me Mine is a great spot for budding artists—children of all ages can create their own masterpieces at this friendly spot. Painters are welcome to drop in at any time during open studio hours. There are also special events scheduled throughout the year, such as “Kids’ Night Out” on December 7 (pre-registration required). The standard studio fee is $9 and $6 for children 10 years and under. The Funplex (East Hanover)
With over 100,000 square feet of attractions, there’s plenty to keep all ages busy at this family amusement center. The arcade features everything from Boardwalk classics like Skeeball and air hockey to the latest video games. Bumper cars, go-karts and laser tag are perfect choices for older kids. Gravity Vault (Chatham)
If your kids are climbing the walls, bring them to this indoor rock climbing facility where such behavior is encouraged. Children ages 5 & up can participate—no reservations are required for walk-in climbing, which is possible anytime during regular business hours. Kids can climb with a parent (if certified) or work with one of Gravity Vault’s instructors. Classes, break camps, summer camps and birthday parties are available too. Imagine That!!! (Florham Park)
This wonderful museum is a perfect indoor destination for younger children. Over 50 hands-on exhibits and activities are designed to spark the imagination, providing plenty of opportunity for imaginative play. My son loves shopping at the grocery store, mailing packages at the post office and climbing aboard the pirate ship. There’s a wonderful arts & crafts area featuring seasonal projects, as well as a brand-new sandbox. Special events are scheduled throughout the year—don’t miss Breakfast with Santa in December! Jump On In (Boonton)
Bounce the day away at this indoor facility featuring inflatable bounce houses, obstacle courses, slides, tunnels and more! Preschool Open Jump is offered on Wednesday mornings from 10-11:30am and Thursday afternoons from 12:30-2pm. All Age Open Jump is every Wednesday from 4-5:30pm. Special events, such as Thanksgiving Weekend Jumps, are often scheduled—please check the website for up-to-date details. Admission is $10 per child, with discounts for multiple children. Kid-Netic (Montville)
Kid-Netic is a huge indoor playground featuring a 3-level play structure, a rock climbing wall and mats of all different shapes and sizes. Kids can jump around in the ball room, visit the alligator pit and climb over bridges and under tunnels. The rock wall is specially designed for children under 10 years old and offers a great introduction to climbing. Morris Museum (Morristown)
Permanent exhibits include kid favorites Dinosaur Den, where visitors can examine fossils, and Model Trains & Railroads, perfect for train enthusiasts of all ages. From November to March, the amazing LEGO sculptures of Nathan Sawaya will be on view. Special children’s programs such as “Super Science Saturdays” for ages 5 & up and “Tot Tours” for kids 2-5 are regularly scheduled. There are also children’s theatre performances throughout the year.
