We Lost Our Gold: Hunting REAL Pirate Treasure in Manhattan

8/3/10 - By Marcy

Ahoy Mateys, there's treasure buried in NYC! And your kids can try to find it, no pullin' yer peg leg. The "Pirate Gold" is actually ten thousand dollars in real US mint one dollar coins (which are gold toned), it's buried in New York City in one of the five boroughs, and to get the clues to find the treasure you have to watch very silly videos of a motley crew of muppet-like pirates (and one Ninja!) giving secret hints as to the location.

The premise is that this bungling crew misplaced their treasure and has to retrace their steps to find it, but if you beat them to the punch and dig it up first, winner take all.  The fun lasts for exactly two months, as only one episode of clues is "unlocked" each week (there are 8 of 'em). Though younger scallywags will surely love the videos (my toddler was delighted), this challenging game is best for bigger kids (7 and up methinks) who know the city well. In the first video, for example, they give hints about Central Park, where the treasure hunt begins, and they mention Balto--which little Encyclopedia Browns recognize as the statue of one very heroic dog.  For city sleuths-in-training and Jolly Rodger fans alike it's a worthy (and semi-educational) adventure whether or not they get to be the lucky mates who nail the gold or not. So yo (ho ho!), check it out!
