Hitting the dance floor is a great kids' activity that gets the body moving and the creativity flowing. Whether your tiny dancers want to bust a move at a hip hop class or twirl in tutus in ballet class, there's a perfect dance class for every style in the Boston area. Not sure what kind of dance class to start with? Try out a combo class to sample a variety of moves or give something international or acro/rock-n-roll a try. And if you're not ready to head inside the studio yet, many dance studios are offering virtual options, too.

From toddler movement with music sessions to more competitive dance classes that run all the way through teens, we've rounded up the best kids' programs in Boston and surrounding neighborhoods. 1. Pre-Ballet with The Boston Ballet — South End, Newton

At The Boston Ballet, tiny ballerinas learn the fundamentals of ballet in a studio setting while facing a mirror, just like the big ballet dancers. There are three levels—Pre-Ballet 1, Pre-Ballet-2, and Primary—for kids ages 5-7, before graduating to the Classical Ballet Program. 

2. Toddler Ballet at Little Lovage Club — South End 

Tiny dancers, ages 12-36 months, are introduced to the foundation of ballet and movement in a simple and playful way at Little Lovage Club's ballet class. With less focus on ballet form and technique, kids will concentrate on improving balance and coordination, developing listening and gross motor skills, and having fun.

3. Ballet Class with Mini Movers — Charlestown

Dancers ages 2 to 4 can take their pirouettes and plies outdoors for Mini Movers' ballet class. Ballerinas should bring a yoga mat for this program that focuses on having fun while dancing. 

4. Beginner Ballet at Tony Williams Dance Center — Jamaica Plain

Tony Williams Dance Center takes the students into the world of classical music and teaches discipline and grace. Technique-based training is offered from a young age, teaching correct placement and knowledge of the body as a fine-tuned instrument. Beginner ballet classes begin at age 6.
