WeeWork Preschool Activity: Make an I Spy Book for Playful Storytelling

11/11/14 - By Stephanie Ogozalek

This playful storytelling game and I Spy-style book uses everyday items found around the house and is inspired by Minimón, the immersive dance production for tots at the New Victory Theater in New York City. In this fun show specifically designed for little ones ages 1 to 4, surprises are pulled from every corner of an imaginary bedroom, delighting tots. You can create similar magic at home with this fun I Spy activity.

Work with your kids to explore your home and collect toys and other items to create interactive stories and an I Spy-style photo book.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

1. Dig through your junk drawer or the kid's toy chest to collect beloved household items. Try to look for items in unexpected places and imagine the story behind the discarded pen cap you find buried in your couch cushions. Maybe the pen cap decided to go deep-couch diving after it overheard the Jacques Cousteau documentary your family watched last week.

2. Once you’ve collected your items, arrange them on the floor or on your kitchen table. Preschoolers can organize the items by color or by shape, or use your imaginations to incorporate the different objects into stories.

3. After you’ve played with your scene and settle on each item’s placement, take an overhead photo of your arrangement. Change the layout a few times, always snapping a pic, and then print your photos and turn them into your own custom I Spy book.

Creating imaginative stories with household objects can provide unexpected entertainment. Read your book together and find new tales to tell. Your I Spy book will become a souvenir of your stories.

This activity was created by our friends at the New Victory Theater in New York City. The theater's current production is Minimón. See what else the New Vic has coming up for tots.

Show us what you make. Share it on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and tag @mommypoppins so we can see your creations too!

Kids' work is to play. WeeWork is a Mommy Poppins series offering an easy daily activity for grown-ups and children to do together, making kids' work an important part of your day. We aim to inspire together time, creativity and fun using only your imagination and things around the house. You can see all our WeeWork activity posts here.
