The Academy Museum invites families to celebrate Día de Muertos with a book reading and workshop.

To start the day, Lil’ Libros illustrator Luis San Vicente reads and signs his newest book, Huesos.

The story follows Huesos, Abuelo’s four-legged travieso, and his journey through the afterworld. Children can learn about the special bond between humans and their pets, promoting empathy and compassion in a light-hearted way while also highlighting the roles pets play in our lives. This book also introduces children to the cultural significance of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), fostering cultural awareness and appreciation for traditions beyond their own in both English and Spanish.

Following the book signing, the museum hosts a Día de Muertos workshop featuring Huesos in the Shirley Temple Education Studio. Families can create their own Huesos skeleton puppet and a scene to go with it.

A separate museum admission ticket is required to visit the galleries. Admission for children 17 and under is free.
