Bergen County Cupcake Shops That Take The Cake

9/29/16 - By Stacey Feintuch

Are you a cupcake fiend who lives in Bergen County? Your sweet tooth is in luck, because the area is packed with yummy cupcake spots. Whether it's a post-play snack, an after-dinner treat, or a birthday party, these shops offer bite-size cakes for any occasion. One of the great things about cupcakes is that everyone can choose something different: these bakeries offer seasonal flavors ranging from pumpkin cannoli (for fall) and watermelon (for summer) to perennial favorites such as red velvet and vanilla with chocolate frosting, as well as gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, vegan, and kosher options. (And when a cupcake just isn't enough, you can always add some ice cream.) Do we have your mouth watering yet? Read on for some of our favorite local cupcakeries.

Carlo’s Bake Shop —Ridgewood
This family-owned bakery, with locations throughout the state, was featured on TLC’s Cake Boss and is known to have lines out the door. Ring in each season with themed cupcakes or try the signature flavors, which include red velvet, peanut butter, Oreo, carrot cake, caramel, hazelnut, and chocolate. Take your treats home or enjoy them in the shop's café.

Feeling patriotic? Try the cupcakes that made Oprah's "O" list: red velvet (red chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting) and blue velvet (blue vanilla cake with cream cheese frosting, sprinkles, and silver balls). The bakery also offers seasonal specials and fun twists on the traditional cupcake that are guaranteed to brighten up any party, such as tie-dye, dirt-and-worm, and s'mores. Note: the Ridgewood shop offers seating as well as vegan and gluten-free options; the Englewood shop has gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, and kosher cakes but no seating.

Through word of mouth, Kara Schnaidt moved from baking cakes for family events to opening her own bakery last year. Her everyday flavors are chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, and Funfetti (as well as gluten-free); other, more offbeat offerings vary by day and season, and include strawberry Nutella and maple bacon. If you can't wait till you get home to dig in, the bakery has a small café area.

Mr. Cupcakes—Hackensack, Oradell
This cupcakes-only chain, with five locations throughout New Jersey, offers more than 40 flavors, from the anything-but-ordinary "Plain Jane" and "Average Joe" (frosted yellow cupcakes) to Fruity Pebbles (yellow cake baked with Fruity Pebbles topped with peanut butter buttercream and Fruity Pebbles) and French toast (yellow cake baked with maple syrup and cinnamon topped with white frosting and cinnamon). Choose from mini, standard, and jumbo sizes, as well as a gluten-free option. Both locations are takeout only, but will happily bring your prepaid order out to your car.

Vegans can satisfy their cupcake cravings thanks to this takeout shop where everything is 100-percent vegan. Purists will love the White Room (vanilla cake with vanilla frosting); those with a wilder side might go for the Sexy Sadie, named after the Beatles song (red velvet cake both filled and topped with vegan cream cheese frosting). Sweet Avenue also offers a small selection of gluten-free and soy-free vegan cupcakes.
