John Waters’s work has been celebrated in many ways, especially his film Hairspray (1988), which inspired a Broadway musical in 2002 and the 2007 musical film.

The Academy Museum hosts an interactive conversation and dance workshop inspired by the vibrant choreography of Hairspray.

The event features a guest choreographer leading inspired dances and conversation about how different styles of dance contribute to storytelling within the themes of civil rights and racism. Participants learn how to do the Mashed Potato, the Twist, and many more iconic dance moves!

This workshop is fun for all ages. The program does not include gallery access.
