New Haven
There are many family attractions in this collegiate city, located 90 minutes from NYC and just a bit farther from Boston. Thanks to its manageable size and excellent Amtrak and Metro-North rail links, New Haven makes an excellent car-free getaway.  Several museums are free, there are eclectic shops and a world-class restaurant, Claire’s Corner Copia, offers inexpensive, healthy and delicious casual meals. Woodloch Resort, PA
Woodloch Resort in the Pocono Mountains is only 90 miles from NYC and Philly. They are offering a good deal if you’re seeking an all-inclusive vacation just before Thanksgiving. The "Thanksgiving Sampler" rate is available for stays from November 24-26 and includes accommodations, all meals and activities. Pennsylvania Dutch Country
Amish Country is an easy overnight getaway for Philadelphia families, and not too far for Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England residents to visit for a weekend. Greystone Manor Victorian Inn, located in Bird-in-Hand, is offering the S’mores and More Family Getaway through December 31, 2014.  For $459 you get two nights in a suite with two separate bedrooms, full hot breakfast for the family each morning, a horse and buggy tour and everything you need to make S’mores in the outdoor fire pit each evening.

Maine Huts & Trails
Maine Huts & Trails are eco-lodges located in Kingfield, Maine. Time spent here is a terrific way to get the family back-to-nature.  The eco-huts connect with 80 miles of trails offering outdoor enthusiasts loads of possibilities. The woods of western Maine are stunning in all seasons, and November features reduced fall season rates.  Overnight rates are $35 per person for non-members in a shared hut. Or bring the extended family and rent an entire hut for $600 per night. Fall is self-catering season here, so you’ll need to prepare you own meals. You can bring groceries and cook in the spacious communal kitchen. This getaway is recommended for active families, as the walk from the parking area to the huts is at least 1.8 miles. The fall season rates are valid until December 18.

Shenandoah National Park
Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is majestic in all seasons. Get a third night’s lodging free when you pay for two nights.  You need to purchase a $50 meal voucher redeemable at the park’s various restaurants for this deal to be valid. Stay at Skyland Resort or Big Meadows Lodge and enjoy nature’s splendor as you hike, horseback ride and participate in ranger-led programs.  The Shenandoah Spectacular package is valid through November 23.

Amtrak
Book a full fare seat on Amtrak's scenic Adirondack line now through November 30 and get a companion seat at 50% off the regular price. Children 2-15 already get a 50% discount. This offer is valid for train travel during the month of February 2015, but you need to book soon to get this discount. Jupiter’s newest upscale hotel destination is located on the Intracoastal Waterway. It offers families 179 guestrooms (many with terraces), a rooftop pool and an award-winning restaurant. The Fontainebleau, Miami
This large hotel attracts a party crowd as well as families.  There are multiple pools, a kid’s camp and an evening drop-off babysitting program, so parents can have an adults-only dinner. Stay two nights and get the third night free with the Fall for Bleau promotion.  This deal is available for stays from November 19-December 1 and December 7-24, so start booking at www.fontainbleau.com.

West Coast

LA Hotel Week
For West Coast families, late November-early December might be the right time to visit Los Angeles or take a staycation in your own city. Hotel Week LA will debut November 29-December 14, 2014.  Pricey properties, some which usually charge upwards of $500 per night, are slashing their rates to $100, $200 or $300 per night.  You book directly with the specific hotel, mentioning Hotel Week LA when you reserve.  Kid-friendly hotels participating in the inaugural event include Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel for $300 per night and the hipster Sixty Beverly Hills for $200.  For a complete list of participating hotels, click here.

Death Valley
Autumn is a good time to visit Death Valley, with temps a touch cooler.
