Mostly Free and Fun Things To Do In CT With Kids This Weekend March 16-17: Pancakes, Princesses and St. Patrick's Day

3/13/13 - By Christine

I'm not Irish and I don't like beer or corned beef, so St. Patrick's Day has always been a non-event for me.  Just another day on the calendar.  However, with kids this holiday takes on a whole new meaning and offers so many new opportunities for fun.  This weekend I (along with the kiddos of course) am going to make my very first Leprechaun Trap.  Yes, that's right, a Leprechaun Trap.  A few short years ago I never knew such a thing existed.  Also on the agenda for Sunday are rainbow cupcakes and a Pinterest inspired craft.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

We've made it easy for you to plan ahead with our Go to List of the Best Things to do in March  to help you reserve a place on your calendar for some of the events around the state that we've chosen to highlight this month.

Put your taste buds to the test to see if you can tell the difference between "real and fake" maple syrup at the New Canaan Nature Center's Pancake Breakfast.  Enjoy pancakes after you hike down Maple Lane and learn how Maple trees are tapped and syrup is made at the sugar shack. Also this weekend The Audubon Sharon hosts it's Maplefest where families will visit three different stations that demonstrate syrup production.  While you're there pick up some fresh maple syrup to take home.

Adventurous children and adults can participate in the Spring Plunge and Cannonball Competition at Brownstone Park in Portland while helping to raise money for the Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Spectator passes are available for those who would rather watch the event than brave the icy water.

You don't need to travel all the way to Disney World for your little princess to meet her favorite princess friends.  The Princess Place at Bridgeport's Bijou Theater will open it's royal doors on Saturday.  The event begins with the musical theater presentation "Eugenia, A Princess Story" and ends with fairytale princesses brought to life for autographs and photos.

Fuel up on corned beef and cabbage at the  Church of the Epiphany in Southbury or Cheshire Grange Hall in Cheshire.  The New Haven Public Library and the Fairfield Library have free Irish Folk Music concerts for the whole family to enjoy.  Kids can visit the Gunn Memorial Library in Washington on Saturday to make their own creation to tempt a tricky Leprechaun.  Many towns are offering St. Patrick's Day parades, but The Greenwich St. Patrick's Day Parade is one of the few that actually takes place on March 17th. We've rounded up more Irish fun events in both Fairfield and New Haven counties.

Kids wearing green to the Beardsley Zoo on Sunday will receive free admission with a paying adult.  Or if you're looking for a little time to yourself on St. Patrick's Day, reserve a spot to drop the kids off at Kickaro's Martial Arts' Kid's Day Out.  The kids will enjoy guided activities, games, snacks, crafts and more.

When Easter falls in March it always sneaks up on me.  Don't let it arrive without a visit to the Easter Bunny.   He's appearing regularly at the Stamford Town Center, Danbury Fair Mall and Crystal Mall in Waterford.  We've also compiled a list of upcoming Easter Egg Hunts in Fairfield County.

Summer camp registration is in full swing throughout the state.  Let us help you find a camp that matches your child's interests.  Our latest camp posts cover Day Camps in Fairfield County, Astronomy, Robotics and Science Camps in Hartford County and Girls Only Overnight Camps in CT. Of course, our CT Summer Camp Guide is one heck of a great resource too.

Check our events calendar often because we add new events everyday and as always you can sign up to get our updates on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Enjoy this weekend with your family!
