Long Island Kids' Activities August 23-24: Feasts, Marvel Universe Live, Turtle Hatching & More

With two weekends left in summer, Mommy Poppins has a family-friendly weekend round up that is sure to keep your brood in a good mood. Show off your ginormous homegrown tomatoes at Hicks in Westbury, yo-ho-ho along with some mateys at How I Became a Pirate or greet some turtles as they hatch at Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery. All Weekend

Family Film Festival - Westhampton. Three days of family-friendly films at the Westhampton Performing Arts Center, including How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 3D.

The Fest of Mother Cabrini - Brentwood. This weekend and next this all-weekend festival will be held featuring games, rides and carnival-style food.

Create Your Own Sea Creature - Port Jefferson. Make your own life-sized sea creature at the Martime Explorium to take home. Cost: $5/per person.

Messy Afternoons - Garden City. On both Saturday and Sunday at the Long Island Children's Museum, kids can get messy. Cost: $3 with museum admission ($2 LICM members).

Marvel Universe Live! - Uniondale. This live-action show at Nassau Coliseum will feature Spider-Man and Wolverine, the Avengers, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus and more. Cost: $55-170.

Saturday, August 23

Turtle Hatch Day at Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium - Cold Spring Harbor. The Hatchery invites the public to celebrate the hatching of their baby turtles. Professional staff will be on hand to answer questions. Refreshments & turtle crafts will be available. Cost: General admission.

The Enchanted Sea Puppet Show - Port Jefferson. Presented by Little Feat Productions, this puppet show will feature under sea adventures. Cost: $10 adults/$5 kids. Children under age 1 are free.

Creature Feature - Orient. Meet local wildlife, make a craft and more. Event is weather permitting. Cost: Free ($10 vehicle use fee, Empire Pass members enter for free.)

Tomato Contest - Westbury. 17th Annual Tomato Contest at Hicks Nurseries. Long Island gardeners – adults and children – are invited to bring their home-grown tomatoes for judging. Cost: Free admission.

Summertime with Long Island Artists and Authors - Great River. Bring your family and friends for a fun day at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River and enjoy an oasis of quiet pleasure, rest, and refreshments as you delight in the beauty of the outdoors and gain a greater appreciation and understanding of the value and importance of informal planting while you stroll back in time. Cost: Free.

RoboFun Pre-Roboics Workshop - Long Beach. RoboFun and My Beach Baby have teamed up for a mini-engineering class for grades K-3. Registration required. Cost: Free.

Yoga at the Farm - Peconic. Join a yoga teacher in the fields of Sang Lee Farms for yoga followed by a fresh organic veggie juice. Children and adults welcome. Bring a mat or towel. Cost: $15/person.

How I Became a Pirate - Oakdale. This book comes to life on stage in a theatrical performance. Show dates through Aug. 23. Cost: $12/ticket.

Craft for Kids - New Hyde Park. At Lakeshore Learning Store, kids can do a free craft. Cost: Free.

Train a Seal, Kiss a Sea Lion at the Long Island Aquarium - Riverhead. Bring the kids to the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead on Saturday for a fun-filled day of behind-the-scenes action. During the event, which runs from 10:15am to 2:15pm, kids will be able to get up close and personal with some of the creatures that call the aquarium home. Cost: $155 per person.

Science Saturday at the Long Island Science Center - Riverhead. Kids can learn and play at the Long Island Science Center with over 30 hands-on exhibits. The center is open from 11am to 4pm. Cost: $5 per person.

Sunday, August 24

Garden Sprouts! Kids Garden with a Jewish Twist - Aquebogue. Garden Sprouts is a sensory-rich experience on the farm that will help families create connections between nature and Jewish Life. Values such as appreciation of beauty, stewardship and care, cooperation and teamwork, and the blessings of food, family and celebration are woven into each class. Cost: $8 at the door.

Jr. Marine Biologist - Centerport Beach. Learn about the marine environment through hands-on time with marine animals, beach activities, and crafts. Cost: $25 per child with adult.

LEGO Club at CMEE - Bridgehampton. Children's Museum of the East End, Bridgehampton, 10am. Children can construct works of art using the thousands of Legos at the Museum. Cost: Free with admission.

Messy Afternoons at LICM - Garden City. Long Island Children's Museum, Garden City, 3:30pm-5pm. Work on a fun project at LICM. Cost: Free with admission. (All weekend)

Mommy/Daddy Me Anti-Gravity Yoga - Bellmore. Have your little one explore the Anti-Gravity hammocks while building basic motor skills. All kids AGY classes are structured to introduce basic life skills and build confidence in a light-hearted way while having fun. Cost: $20.

Family Sundays at the Nassau County Museum of Art - Roslyn. Each Sunday, Nassau County Museum of Art offers a 1pm docent-led family walk-through of the exhibition and supervised art activities for the whole family beginning at 1:30pm. Special family-friendly gallery guides of the main exhibition are available in the galleries.
