LA Gyms with Childcare: Where Moms Work Out With Kids in Tow
That Angelina Jolie - what's she's got, 42 kids? And still she looks like Lara Croft. And all those A-list moms who weepingly thank their toddlers during their Oscar acceptance speeches - please! How could they possibly get into those dresses a year after giving birth? The truth is we know the answer: It's good old-fashioned childcare. While those red carpet mamas are going to their daily Pilates and hot yoga classes, someone else is changing their kids' diapers and making their dinner. Taking fitness classes together with our little ones is wonderful for family bonding, but when it's time to get back into our old jeans, we need gyms with childcare. And that's what all of the gyms below have.
L.A. Athletic Club
431 West Seventh Street
Los Angeles, CA 90014
LA's oldest health club in a century-old Beaux Arts building downtown, LA Athletic Club offers members childcare for children up to age seven for $2/hour while Mom is participating in a structured class.
200 N. Harbor Drive
Redondo Beach, CA 90277
Redondo's Fitness Evolution knows how to treat parents right, with a flat fee of $3 per child for as long as the member parent is working out at the gym.
345 South Lake Ave
Pasadena, CA 91105
This popular gym in Pasadena offers members childcare for $7/hour, with discounts available when purchasing multiple sessions.
1835 Sepulveda Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90025
The West LA address listed above is just one of 15 locations Equinox has dotted around LA and Orange County. The chain of luxurious spa/gyms has a childcare option available to members while they're working out; the childcare is not included in the membership price, and the gym does not share what the charges for the program are over the phone. We're guessing that, like most things at Equinox, it's pretty pricey.
1553 N. Schrader Blvd.
Hollywood, CA 90028
Pretty much the polar opposite of Equinox, YMCA has even more locations in the LA area and is quite open about its childcare costs: FREE. There are so many great reasons to join your local YMCA - including after school care, swimming lessons, day camps, and overnight camps (and that's without even counting the great theme song!) - and free childcare for parents while they work out is just one more. Infants are restricted to one free hour per day, and kids over the age of one are limited to two free hours per day - plenty of time for a good workout.
17383 W. Sunset Boulevard
Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
Spectrum has eight locations around the Westside, South Bay, and the Valley, and each one has a fully staffed Kids' Club available to parents while working out. Little ones from ages three months to 12 years are welcome to spend up to two hours per day at a rate of $6/hour.
Total Woman Gym & Day Spa
2755 Pacific Coast Highway
Torrance, CA 90505
With locations all over the San Fernando Valley as well as the South Bay and Orange County, Total Woman offers up to two hours of child care while a member is working out at the club. There is a charge, which varies according to membership level and - like with Equinox - is only disclosed in person.
