February GoList: Best Things To Do in Westchester with Kids

Though February is prone to unsavory weather, the bright side is the many exciting family events happening in Westchester and the Hudson Valley. With celebrations of Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, Black History Month, Mardi Gras, Lunar New Year, and Leap Day, the fun is sure to chase away the chill! Among the standouts are the WACA Chinese New Year Festival, and the sure-to-sell-out Victorian Valentine Tea

Check out other February traditions like Old-Fashioned Winter’s Afternoon, offering a wintry mix of fun; and Maple Sugaring Tours (with a kick-off party, to boot), heralding the launch of maple-sugaring season. Beyond all this, there are numerous shows we’re itching to see (unfortunately, Pete the Cat, highlighted in our 50 winter activities post, is sold out). Soon we’ll be telling you all the great reasons not to go away for Winter Break, one of which is that the Royal Hanneford Circus is coming to town.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! Read on for the full list of our month’s top picks, and remember you'll find many more on our Event Calendar, plus lots more on the way. Sign up for our newsletters to keep track of new finds!

February GoList: The Best Things to Do With Long Island Kids

February doesn't get enough credit. Sure, it's a short month and a little (a lot!) on the chilly side, but there's so much to celebrate. February is one big party, especially this year, when we get an extra day to enjoy.

Start the month off by celebrating the Lunar New Year with Chinese cultural celebrations in Stony Brook, and Port Washington, and Locust Valley. And then quickly find out from Holtsville Hal, Long Island's favorite Groundhog, whether or not to expect an early spring. And don't forget to root for your favorite team on Superbowl Sunday!

Mid-month, we'll celebrate those we care for on Valentine's Day, followed by a week off from school that kids will really love. It's never too early, or too late, to sign them up for enriching President's Week Break classes and camps.

And before things thaw out for good, celebrate the final days of winter at Sag Harbor's annual winter celebration or the inaugural Port Jefferson Village Ice Festival

For more inspiration to combat those winter blues, visit our Winter Fun Guide. And don't forget that our Long Island Events Calendar offers exciting family options as they develop throughout the month.

25 Fun Things To Do in Connecticut with Teens

Kids don't need to have a license to rule the road. Photo courtesy of Supercharged Racing

Gone are the days of bouncy houses and playgrounds, but spending quality time with children is just as—perhaps more—precious as they navigate the teen years. Teens are notoriously hard to impress, but you'll earn major cool points by joining them in activities like escape rooms, salt cavescamping, consignment shopping, and more.

If you're searching for more ideas about what to do with teens around Connecticut, remember amusement parks and great restaurant meals are hits with all ages. Once you've scored some cool points with your teens, treat the younger kids in your life to age-appropriate fun at these indoor play spaces or awesome playgrounds.

A Latte Fun, Long Island's New Play Space and Cafe: It's Fun for Everyone

A Latte Fun, which opened in Huntington in January, is Long Island's newest place for parents to socialize and relax while children explore and play. Caregivers, parents and grandparents can sip their foamy lattes and chat while crawlers and kids explore the safe and fun indoor play area, attend classes and celebrate birthdays at A Latte Fun.

Long Island boasts plenty of indoor options for family fun. There are storytimes, indoor play spaces and more play spaces with cafes across Long Island. And for all winter-themed activities check out Mommy Poppins’ Winter Fun Guide for Long Island Families.

Find High-Energy Fun at North Jersey's New Indoor Action Center

Xtreme Energy, which opened in Englewood, NJ, in fall 2019, offers fun for toddlers to teens.

I'm usually pretty tolerant of a noisy, sometimes floor-vibrating home, but when my kids recently turned the couch into a trampoline and the dining room into an obstacle course, I knew it was time to burn off some steam elsewhere. With the January cold upon us, indoor play was clearly the way to go, so we decided to check out one of Northern NJ's newest indoor playgrounds: Xtreme Energy in Englewood.

The facility, which opened in the fall, is amazing for kids and preteens—especially those who love climbing, jumping, and challenging themselves with unique physical activities.

Things To Do in Westchester this Weekend: Winterfest, Bindlestiff Cirkus, Owls

The final weekend of January brings lots of fun indoor and outdoor winter activities for Westchester and Hudson Valley families. Whether you're looking to embrace winter or dodge it, there's a variety of programming to choose from.

If your family is in the "embrace winter" camp, your best bet may be the FREE Hyde Park Winterfest, offering assorted snow sports plus warming treats like marshmallow-roasting and hot cocoa. Alternatively, try the Winter Story Walk, a less sporty affair that ventures into the nature preserve but also tops off with cocoa and treats; this, too, is FREE.

Our favorite performance this week is by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. Crafty indoor fun (with an eco-conscious bent) can be found at the upcycling Book/Magazine Sculpture Workshop. Fans of American Girl dolls—or even stuffed animals—can gear up for Lunar New Year by crafting doll attire and learning about the holiday.

There's more where that came from, so read on for our top picks. Be sure to check out our Event Calendar for daily activities. If you haven't done so already, sign up for our newsletters to stay in the know!
