Oh the horror! Catalina Island Museum's 38th annual Avalon Silent Film Showcase features the very first of the Universal Monsters alongside the very last.

The festival is one of the world’s longest-running annual celebrations of Silent Film, offering an authentic 1920s cinematic experience.

Friday May 16:
Creature from the Black Lagoon in 3-D (8pm) is the final film in Universal Pictures’ legendary monster series. Film historian and 3-D expert Eric Kurland presents rarely seen production photographs and introduce the film, highlighting its place in cinematic history.  Admission includes 3-D glasses to take home. This screening is held under the stars at Catalina Museum for Art & History’s Ackerman Family Amphitheater.

Saturday May 17:
Phantom of the Opera (1:30pm) In honor of the 100th anniversary of a cinematic milestone, the museum screens The Phantom of the Opera (1925), starring Lon Chaney. The screening features the world premiere of a newly commissioned score, performed live by acclaimed composer Michael D. Mortilla and a talented ensemble of musicians. This event is at the historic Avalon Casino Theatre.
