Art in the Barn storytime highlights award-winning Caldecott books and includes a hands-on art project for preschoolers at the Walt Whitman Birthplace.
Taught by Lena Massari Sawyer, former Museum Educator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Join in each week as they read various stories including the award-winning Caldecott books. Learn about artists of the past and create your own artwork.
- Saturday, July 13: The circus comes to the Art Barn at Walt Whitman Birthplace. Create your own circus, painting as you learn about 19th and 20th century artists Seurat, Toulouse Lautrec, Marc Chagall and Picasso, who were all fascinated by the circus. Class ends on the great lawn with turn of the century children’s toys.
- Saturday, July 27: Food, food, food! Throughout the centuries artists have been inspired to create works of art based on food. Learn about giant hamburgers by Claes Oldenburg, Hot dogs by Roy Lichtenstein and soup cans by Any Warhol. Class will end with your own creation, pizza made from clay.
- Saturday, August 10: Paint your own bird house. Birdhouse and seed will be provided.
- Saturday, August 31: Pharaohs, Queens and Mummies! Did you know that Walt Whitman was influenced by Ancient Egyptian mythology? Learn how to write your name with ancient hieroglyphics and try on a Pharaoh’s crown.
