Bluey's Big Play: A Preschooler's Rock Concert

Bluey's Big Play

If you have preschoolers and you don't live under a rock, you might have heard of Bluey. The Australian cartoon about a family of heelers (a breed of dog) has swept the nation with its seven-minute episodes full of catchy music and jokes that are as much for grown-ups as they are for kids. Our kids are around the same age as the title character and her little sister, Bingo, and like the family in the show, our older child looks like Dad and our younger child looks like Mom, so we were early adopters of the Bluey craze. When we found out that Bluey's Big Play: The Stage Show would be coming to the Chicago Theatre for real life, we jumped in our car with the "Nice Parking Spot, Rita" bumper sticker and drove as fast as we could to get tickets.

Sky Skate Elevates Winter Fun with Ice Skating Rink at Edge New York

Skate far above the city streets at Sky Skate, now open on the 100th floor of Edge New York at Hudson Yards.

When it comes to winter sports, NYC seems to be embroiled in a game of seasonal one-upmanship. There are dueling bumper cars on ice, rooftop ice skating rinks, and even our very own skate-and-play mashup of ice skating and gaming, but Edge New York is elevating winter fun—literally. The sky-high observation deck has just introduced Sky Skate, which allows visitors to glide across the highest ice skating rink in NYC—and the entire Western Hemisphere—as the city buzzes below.

Unlike our favorite seasonal outdoor ice skating rinks, Sky Skate is indoors, so it's an all-weather activity, though you'll want to bring along the hats, scarves, and gloves so you can step outside and take in the open-air observation deck views when you're done.

10 New England Ski Resorts That Cater to Families

Conquering a New England ski trail together as a family makes for a great memory. Photo courtesy of the Stowe Mountain Resort, Facebook

Family ski trips are tough to beat, and New England is packed with ski resorts that cater to families. Skiing is one of the few sports where kids can quickly learn to meet—or in our family, surpass—parents' ability. Conquering a tough slope or cruising together down an easy one are the stuff of great memories. That said, not all ski resorts make it easy for families to deal with real parenting needs while on the slopes, but we found some New England ski resort gems that do. These ski resorts in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine cater to families with plenty of beginner trails, daycare, lots of food options, condo-style lodging, ice skating, snow tubing, ski camps, and more.

If you are looking for places to practice before a family ski vacation, these slopes near Boston and Connecticut are perfect for a short day trip or weekly lessons. Have fun out there!
