Summer Film Series: Stand and Deliver (1988)
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes hosts a free screening of the film Stand and Deliver. A panel discussion with members of the cast and creative team precedes the screening.
Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos) was a math teacher at East L.A.’s Garfield High School. He sought to change school culture to help students excel in academics, setting to the goal of having his students take AP Calculus by their senior year, while instructing them under the philosophy of ganas, roughly meaning the desire to do something, in this case to learn the math.
The event includes music by Los Vex Pistols and a presentation/panel discussion moderated by Bel Hernandez before the screening.
