Discover a World-Class Private School in the Hamptons on Saturday, November 15

11/13/14 - By Linda DiProperzio

Education has been dominating the headlines for several years now. While many are trying to figure out a better way to teach our children how to be the global citizens that their world will require of them, Ross School has been doing it for over 23 years. Our sponsor, Ross School, on Eastern Long Island, offers hands-on learning for children from pre-nursery through grade 12. Mommy Poppins readers can check out Ross School for themselves at two Open Houses on Saturday, November 15, 2014.

Ross School is separated into two campuses: Ross Lower School, for children from pre-nursery through grade 6, is situated on 26-acres in Bridgehampton, while Ross Upper School, sitting on a 140-acre campus in East Hampton, is for kids in grades 7-12. A typical school day at Ross Lower School sounds pretty cool. Students might spend some time visiting the farm animals (yes, they have a farm), speaking Mandarin, building a replica of the Solar System or growing mold spores in the science lab.

Meanwhile, at Ross Upper School, the focus is on how community service, interdisciplinary learning and travel can prepare students for today’s world. Kids are encouraged to explore their various interests through an array of electives, while Innovation Lab @Ross allows students with a passion for science, math, engineering, media and technology to take their studies to the next level. And Field Academy @Ross gives students an opportunity to learn alongside mentors and scholars both on campus and in the field.

Ross School follows a unique Spiral Curriculum, in which learning experiences are integrated across subject areas as they progress through a chronological history of the world. This means that the youngest students are working on art projects about the big bang, middle grade students are celebrating Maya civilization with tamale making and ancient math techniques, and older students are examining modern times and predicting the future in creative writing assignments.

For Upper School students living outside eastern Long Island, Ross School offers two boarding options: Kids can stay near campus full-time, or for five days a week in luxurious boarding houses. Tuition assistance is available for qualifying students.

Perhaps I admire Ross School so much because it takes a similar philosophy to education in the school as we at Mommy Poppins try to achieve outside of school: treating the world as a classroom and finding ways to engage children in their learning through real life experiences and activities.

Long Island parents are invited to learn more about Ross School at two Open Houses on Saturday, November 15th. The first is at Ross Lower School in Bridgehampton from 10am to 12pm, and the second at Ross Upper School in East Hampton from 1pm to 3pm. If you can’t make it, feel free to schedule a tour by email, or come for one of the school’s scheduled Wednesday Walkabouts. For more information, please email Kathy Lattari at klattari@ross.org or visit www.ross.org/apply.
