Winter Break Youth Workshop: Backyard Birders at Planting Fields
Looking for a fun and educational winter break activity for the kids? Join Planting Fields for an interactive, nature-based workshop where young explorers can discover the fascinating birds that spend the winter on Long Island.
Participants will learn about native winter birds such as loons, barred owls, and turkey vultures, and explore the unique adaptations that help them survive colder months through hands-on activities. The group will then head outdoors for a guided nature walk led by Centre Island Bird Sanctuary, using kid-friendly field guides to identify and count local bird species.
The workshop concludes at the Bird Sanctuary, where students will become citizen scientists by contributing observations to the Great Backyard Bird Count, a national initiative that supports bird conservation and research.
