Introducing Weekday Picks for Connecticut Kids: Chess, TEA Rooms, & STOMP, January 5-9
We're kicking off 2015 with a new feature to help you enjoy even more fun activities with your kids. Starting today, every Monday we'll share weekday activity picks to enjoy Monday through Friday in addition to our weekend events round-ups. We're also adding an additional newsletter so our subscribers will get the new weekday events right in their in-box Monday mornings. Not a subscriber? Sign up now!
Most of us return to business as usual this Monday, with school and work back in session, but that doesn't meant the fun has to stop--and it doesn't have to wait for the weekends. This post marks the debut of a new feature: a weekly roundup of our favorite events across the state, happening on weekdays.
Our weekend posts will continue, as will our monthly GoList. And the event calendar, of course, is constantly updated with new activities every day of the week.
OUR LATEST VIDEOS
Monday, January 5th: Kids Chess Club, New Haven Library (New Haven County). On Mondays, members of Yale's Chess Club stop by the main library to volunteer their time as instructors for chess players from age 6 to 16, beginners to advanced players.
Tuesday, January 6th: Open TEA Room, Darien Library (Fairfield County). The TEA (Technology, Engineering, & the Arts) Room is a makerspace, a learning lab, and an artist studio that has been specifically designed for children in grades 3 to 6. The library hosts a drop-in TEA Room every Tuesday in January, and this week's class is dedicated to simple machines: kids can make their own pin-pricked designs on a banana and watch oxidation create a work of art. Pre-registration is not required, but space is limited. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early and checking in with the children's librarians.
Wednesday, January 7th: Young Explorers Kids Series, MakerBot (Fairfield County). The MakerBot store on the Avenue in Greenwich sells the latest maker technology: Replicator Desktop 3D Printers, Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanners, and more. These fun tools don't fit many families' budgets, but the great in-store workshops and classes do. On Wednesday afternoons, this Young Explorers series lets kids play while learning and designing in 3D thanks to easy to use software.
Thursday, January 8th: STOMP, the Palace Theatre (Fairfield County). Okay, with tickets starting at $45, this one is a splurge, but STOMP is a fantastic family friendly event that's sure to change the way you feel about the sounds your kids make pounding on pots and pans around the house. STOMP is explosive, inventive, provocative, witty, and utterly unique. Cast members use everyday objects from matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters, and more to create music and tell stories.
Friday, January 9th: Fireside Stories, Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (New London County). In the wintertime, there's nothing better than snuggling in by a fire and sharing stories. The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center makes this even easier by inviting families with children up to age 8 to relax by the fire and share stories, rhymes and songs.
