What to do New Year's Day with Kids in NY
12/30/07
- By Anna Fader
Start the year off on the artsy side. Here are three off the beaten track ideas for activities to do with kids on New Year's Day in New York.

The Metropolitan Opera's new Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel is getting rave reviews and seems like a great way to introduce older kids to opera. If you missed the free open house performance on December 21st, you'll have another opportunity to share this magical opera with your children.
On New Year's Day they are playing HD recordings of Hansel and Gretel in theaters around the city. Most of the showings are sold out, but many people are not aware that there are also free showings of the HD film of Hansel and Gretel in public schools in each burrough at the same time.
Hansel and Gretel is recommended for children age 8 and older.
At the Film Forum, Charlie Chaplin's City Lights will delight children with Chaplin's clownish foolery as he mistakes cheese for soap and confetti for spaghetti, and gets stuck street cleaning behind an elephant among other silliness. It's playing throughout New Year's Day.
For some odd-ball fun, head out to Coney Island with the kids to watch the Polar Bears in their annual New Year's Day dip at 1PM. The Polar bear Club is a group of people who choose to go swimming in the ocean in freezing conditions.
Don't forget to watch the fireworks on New Year's Eve. They'll be in three locations: Central Park, Prospect Park and over the East River just south of the Brooklyn Bridge.
