October GoList: Best Things To Do With Long Island Kids

Why is it the final day of the month seems to garner all of the attention paid to October? If you didn't know better, on Long Island you might assume all of the month's activities swirled around Halloween.

To which we say, there's a whole month of family-friendly entertainment just waiting to be had. Think about it: The weather is comfortably cool, ideal for picking pumpkins and hayrides. The changing leaves color the Island in natural splendor and cultural and seasonal festivals dot the landscape from Long Beach to Montauk.

Yes, the main event is Halloween; we just don't want you to overlook all this wonderful month has to offer while you are searching for that perfect costume for your little prince or princess. In the 30 days before your community's grand costume parade, make sure you find time for a fall festival, a Columbus Day celebration, even some children's theater. Kids have some down time from school this month, so why not take advantage before things turn a bit chillier.

Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park and Ice Rink Opening at NJ's American Dream in October

American Dream's indoor ice rink will offer open skating sessions for families.

In one month, American Dream in East Rutherford, NJ, just outside of NYC, will officially open its doors—well, two of them, at least. The Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park and the Rink at American Dream will kick off the shopping and entertainment complex's grand opening on Friday, October 25.

Visitors will have to wait a bit longer for the DreamWorks Water Park, which is scheduled to open on Wednesday, November 27, and the Big SNOW indoor snow park, which debuts the following Thursday, December 5.

American Dream's stores, restaurants, and more attractions—including the Sea Life Aquarium, Legoland Discovery Center, KidZania experiential learning center, luxury movie theater, and 300-foot observation wheel—are set to open in March 2020.

31 Things To Do in Gowanus, Brooklyn with Kids

Gowanus may be sandwiched between the famously family-friendly enclaves of Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Park Slope, but the neighborhood holds its own in terms of cool hangouts and play spaces for kids.

With the promise of a $500 million Superfund cleanup of its odoriferous waterway, the Gowanus area is transforming from an industrial pass-through to a destination in its own right, complete with new condo development. Following in the footsteps of nearby Red Hook, warehouses have become art houses, and boutiques and restaurants are opening up left and right. It's no surprise that this Brooklyn neighborhood is attracting young families in droves.

Things To Do in Connecticut this Weekend: Fairies, Giant Pumpkins, Spooky Family Fun

Corn mazes will be packed with puzzlers all weekend. Photo by Ally Noel

Okay, there may have been Halloween candy in the stores for months already. But this weekend marks the beginning of the "Spooky Season," as my kids like to say, with haunted hay rides, haunted "isles", haunted graveyards, and other assorted things that go bump in the night...all happening in Connecticut this weekend!

For parents more interested in daytime or little-kid fun, check out the apacas in Voluntown, the Wee Faerie Village in Old Lyme, or Soupstock, an unexpected marriage of music and soup (yum!) There's also a fantastic, free outdoor movie night in New Haven, a celebration of New Canaan’s history at New Canaan History Day, and afamily-favorite Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off in Ridgefield.

To make sure that you don't miss any of the seasonal fun, bookmark our Connecticut Halloween Fun guide. You can also subscribe to our free weekly newsletters and follow us on Facebook, and Instagram. Have some (spooky) fun out there!

Things To Do in Chicago this Weekend with Kids: Hungry Caterpillar, Fall Fests

Wait, it's just now officially fall? All those fall festivals every weekend in September were just a warm-up round? Well, good thing those apple-picking and corn-mazing muscles are warmed up, because this weekend delivers the harvest season fun in a big way. Fall Fest kicks off this weekend at Lincoln Park Zoo, fall colors explode (literally) at Bolingbrook's fireworks-and-foliage Fall Fest celebration, and fall festivals swing into action in Downers Grove and Oak Park. But holding onto a last breath of summer is encouraged at the Indian Summer Festival in Woodridge.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar opens at the Chicago Children's Theater this weekend with 75 oversize puppets acting out the classic tale. Meanwhile, family-friendly music performances run all weekend at the world-class Hyde Park Jazz Festival.

The big Oktoberfest party at St. Alphonsus hosts a special Kinderfest both days, or if gyoza is more your taste than oompah, head to the World Dumpling Fest at Navy Pier. Treat the family pooch to a fun day of dog-friendly activities and fun at Barkapalooza, or bring your favorite pint-sized Jedi to Star Wars Reads Day.

And those are just the highlights! For more ideas, see our roundup below or check out our ever-expanding event calendar.

Things To Do in NYC This Weekend: Boo at the Zoo, Atlantic Antic, Chile Peppers

Get into the Halloween spirit with Boo at the Zoo, every weekend in October at the Bronx Zoo. Photo by Julie Larsen Maher for the Wildlife Conservation Society

New York City kids itching to get into the "spirit" of Halloween early are in luck: This weekend, the Bronx Zoo launches its revamped, month-long Boo at the Zoo, you can commune with Spooky Pumpkins at the Bronx's Botanical Garden, the 53rd Annual Ragamuffin Parade offers an opportunity to test-drive this year's costumes, Luna Park unleashes Halloween Harvest festivities, and Queens County Farm Museum invites you to get lost in its Amazing Maize Maze.

Feeling extra festive-al? On Saturday, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden celebrates one of autumn's hottest seasonal crops at its annual Chile Pepper Festival, Wyckoff Farmhouse hosts the 8th Annual Breukelen Country Fair, and kids can dive into Hudson River Park's Marine Science fest. On Sunday, head to Pelham Bay Park for the Bronx Native American Festival, to Brooklyn for the 45th Annual Atlantic Antic, or joust gallup up to Inwood for Fort Tryon Park's annual, amazing, Medieval Festival.

All that, plus the opening of the new LEGO exhibit in Queens, the Parade of Trains at Brighton Beach, the last Hans Christian Andersen tale of the year in Central Park, and an outdoor free screening of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (complete with free pretzels, popcorn, and face painting) make this a weekend for the books. Rest up in advance, and then dig in.

Houston's Best Parks & Trails for Family Bike Rides

Encouraging healthy hobbies is at the top of my priority list when it comes to my kids, and I've tried to make being active a part of their lives since day one. Both kids have accompanied me on many runs in the jogging stroller since they were babies, and they know that if it's a nice day we're doing something outside. Now that my oldest is riding his bike, we frequently head out to different trails together where I'll chase after him with my daughter strapped into the jogging stroller as he flies down trails (his biking has been excellent for improving my running speed) or we'll bike together as a family if my husband is able to come along for the ride.
